Investigating gender: Female criminalists in post-socialist Czech television narratives
European media systems in dynamic transition: Comparative results from five countries
Media in Europe have undergone profound transformations. These changes involve structural transformation (global trends, the role of politics, EU, etc.); sectoral transformation (e.g., deriving from within the media domain); and the role of particular individuals (such as media moguls). In this respect, there is a lack of comparative studies which systematically explore the relations between these three dimensions in European transformative proce…
Delayed Reflections: Media and Journalism Data Deserts in the Post-Socialist Czech Republic
One of the key obstacles to the normative development of post-socialist media systems, in general, and the Czech Republic in particular, is the deferral of the thoughtful reflection and critical examination of the evolution of the media industry by academics and professionals. In the early years of post-socialist development, there was a lack of collected data and relevant analysis of the state of the media and journalism. It was foreign research…
Trust and Political Attitudes of Public Service Media Audiences in a Polarized Society: The Case of Czech Television
The paper addresses the role of Czech public service television in polarized society. The research on the audiences of public service media (PSM) is particularly salient concerning specific role; however, it is increasingly questioned in a fragmented and polarized environment. The paper builds on data from 27 semi-structured interviews and a survey conducted in 2019-20 (N=3251). While for some, Czech television is a trustworthy medium protecting …
Beyond stealing: The determinants/motivations of Czech audiences to pay for audiovisual content
In the context of constantly changing media communication and the behavior of different actors engaging it, our paper seeks to map current transformations and adaptations to changes within Czech audiences with a special interest in their media routines and strategies for choosing media sources. As it still remains rather unclear how the post-televisual audience members decide regarding content sources, platforms or services, our main aim is to di…
The Place of Convergent Audiences in the Small Industry Market
In this day and age, it is increasingly important to ask how the cultural industries adapt to the evolution of communication technology. Recent technological changes influencing our understanding of media communication processes are discussed in various fields, with western traditions often predominating. However, the particular impact on industry dynamics is hardly universal. Specifically, the way such changes influence the dynamics of small, di…
When Things Get Real: (Re)Considering the Challenges to Cultural Industries Research
This article considers the practical methodological challenges and variances related to doing research in the cultural industries. More specifically, it seeks to illuminate how considering the specific proclivities of prescribed, historically inflected, fields of study and concomitant sites therein (e.g., in our case study, the infrastructural/cultural dynamics of media organizations in a small, central-European media market) force methodological…
The six faces of ignorance in online piracy: How not knowing shapes the practices of media consumption
The aim of this study is to explore the interrelation between online piracy and ignorance. It brings together literature on both piracy and ignorance and theorizes the role that ignorance plays in media consumption. The empirical analysis first demonstrates how ignorance is used by the members of the Czech Pirate Party to avoid liability for operating a website that streams copyright content. Then, it draws upon interviews with the members of con…
