  • The Drag Performer’s Lived Experience

    Open Access•Shawn Sturnick, Christine Campbell•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2026

This study explored the lived experience of British drag performers, focusing on the complex relationship between their persona and sense of self. Against the backdrop of drag's growing mainstream acceptance, this research addressed a gap in a field dominated by US accounts of cisgender male performers. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six drag performers of diverse gender identities, …

  • Avoidance and empowerment

Open Access•Toni Daniel, Jessica Lamb et al.•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2025

It is well known that sex workers experience high levels of stigma. This research examined the techniques sex workers use to ameliorate the emotional and practical impacts of that stigma. Twenty female sex workers with varying roles of escorts, porn actresses, camgirls and content creators were interviewed. Our participants revealed that they used avoidance techniques, such as selective disclosure and the construction of alternate personas. Inter…

Thermal‐infrared imaging of buildings is used to investigate a range of phenomena including the accumulation of moisture. In general, the presence of moisture poses a direct danger to historic structures and must be characterized prior to any intervention. Many low‐cost imaging solutions are available which has made the technology more accessible. In the current work, TIR imagery (10 m) of a likely gatehouse in the north‐east corner of Ardrossan …

  • Understanding service preferences among consensually non-monogamous individuals seeking sexual healthcare

    Open Access•R Scoats, Christine Campbell•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2025•References: 35

Despite consensually non-monogamous people being a minority population with specific healthcare needs, research on this group is minimal, especially in relation to sexual healthcare. This study explores the motivations behind consensually non-monogamous individuals' choices of sexual healthcare service options. Qualitative survey data was collected from 67 consensual non-monogamists and analysed using thematic analysis. Two key themes captured pa…

  • Diverse but shallow, unrealistic but influential

Open Access•Carol Owens, Craig Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2025•References: 35

In Western women’s clothing marketing, portrayals of slender white female bodies are ubiquitous and unavoidable. However, in 2018, a multitude of images of plus-size models of colour were posted on billboards at bus, train and underground stations in London. We undertook focus groups with women based in London to explore how they made sense of these images. Our findings show participants grappling with two dilemmas: they celebrated that the image…

  • Optimizing the implementation of lung cancer screening in Scotland

Open Access•Debbie Cavers, Mia Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2022

INTRODUCTION: Targeted lung cancer screening is effective in reducing lung cancer and all-cause mortality according to major trials in the United Kingdom and Europe. However, the best ways of implementing screening in local communities requires an understanding of the population the programme will serve. We undertook a study to explore the views of those potentially eligible for, and to identify potential barriers and facilitators to taking part …

  • Students’ Representations of Menopause and Perimenopause

    Open Access•Nikki Hayfield, Christine Campbell•ARTICLE•Sex Roles•2022•References: 6

Representations of peri/menopause are influential in relation to how peri/menopause is understood and how peri/menopausal women are perceived, both of which have important implications for health and wellbeing. In this paper, we report results from a story completion study with 102 undergraduate psychology students. Participants were invited to write a response to a fictional scenario about a peri/menopausal woman. Thematic analysis was used to c…
