  • Ensuring children's inclusion in the Bundibugyo Ebola response

Open Access•Mike Kalmus Eliasz, Michael Adeyemi-Lawal et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Platform Adaptive Randomised Trial for NEw and Repurposed Filovirus treatmentS Open-label, randomised controlled (1:1) Factorial design adaptive platform trial for patients with laboratory-confirmed acute Filovirus Disease 2 Aim: The primary aim is to identify the effect of potential therapies on all-cause mortality at 28 days after randomisation in patients admitted to a healthcare facility with filovirus disease.Design: Multi-country, multi-out…

  • Azithromycin mass drug administration to reduce childhood mortality in humanitarian crises

Open Access•Gregory Barnsley, Matthew E Coldiron et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Azithromycin mass drug administration (MDA) can reduce under-5 mortality in stable but high-mortality settings, yet its potential in humanitarian crises remains undefined. This review proposes that azithromycin MDA could support existing humanitarian interventions and help address mortality from respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in displaced populations. Mortality rates in crises frequently exceed WHO recommended thresholds for initiati…

  • Mpox exposes fundamental obstacles for vaccinating children in outbreaks

Open Access•Neal Russell, Rosalind Scourse et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

box Children could not be included in mpox vaccination roll-out within the first 100 days of the latest Mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and are yet to be rolled out in many countries with rising cases, despite this age group accounting for a large proportion of suspected cases and deaths

  • Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019

    Open Access•Christopher J L Murray, Kevin S Ikuta et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2022

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major threat to human health around the world. Previous publications have estimated the effect of AMR on incidence, deaths, hospital length of stay, and health-care costs for specific pathogen-drug combinations in select locations. To our knowledge, this study presents the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. METHODS: We estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) a…

  • Implementation of maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) in humanitarian settings

Open Access•Neal Russell, Hannah Tappis et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2022

Despite the challenges, examples exist where the lessons learnt from MPDSR processes have led to improved access and quality of care in humanitarian contexts, including successful advocacy. An adapted approach is required to ensure feasibility, with varying implementation being possible in different phases of crises. There is a need for guidance on MPDSR in humanitarian contexts, and for greater documentation and learning from experiences

  • A mixed methods study to assess the impact of Covid-19 on maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition in fragile and conflict-affected settings

Open Access•Mariana Rodo, Lucy Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2022

COVID-19 is further exacerbating negative women's and children's health outcomes in FCAS. Increased funding is urgently required to re-establish MNCHN activities which have been deprioritised or halted. Improved planning to sustain routine health services and enable surge planning for emergencies with focus on the community/service users throughout adaptations is vital for improved MNCHN outcomes in FCAS

  • It's a life you're playing with

    Open Access•Laura B Nellums, Jaynaide Powis et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021•Cited by: 12•References: 57

This study provides new evidence of women's experiences of pregnancy in the UK in the context of increasingly restrictive health policies including charging and data sharing. Six recommendations are made to ensure the UK and other migrant receiving countries work towards reducing inequalities and achieving national and global targets for maternal and child health and universal health coverage

  • Service readiness for inpatient care of small and sick newborns

Open Access•Sarah G Moxon, Tanya Guenther et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2018

BACKGROUND: Each year an estimated 2.6 million newborns die, mainly from complications of prematurity, neonatal infections, and intrapartum events. Reducing these deaths requires high coverage of good quality care at birth, and inpatient care for small and sick newborns. In low- and middle-income countries, standardised measurement of the readiness of facilities to provide emergency obstetric care has improved tracking of readiness to provide car…
