  • Arsenic and fertility

    Open Access•Jonathan James•ARTICLE•Explorations in Economic History•2026

In 1900, thousands of people in England were poisoned by arsenic. The source was beer contaminated by tainted sugar. This paper examines how the poisoning affected birth rates in the affected areas, using an event study difference-in-difference design. The results show that the arsenic-in-beer epidemic caused a 10% drop in births in 1901, but the effect was short-lived. After about 28 weeks, birth rates returned to pre-epidemic levels. Evidence f…

  • The Importance of Student-Teacher Matching

Tom Ahn, Esteban Aucejo et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We propose a framework for value-added models that flexibly characterizes heterogeneous teacher productivity based on multidimensional student characteristics. We show that teacher effectiveness heavily depends on the specific attributes of their students. For example, the difference in value-added between well-matched and poorlymatched students for the average teacher is approximately 0.1 standard deviations in test scores. Notably, these matchi…

  • The ‘Friday effect’

    Open Access•Joanna Clifton‐Sprigg, Jonathan James•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2025•Referencias: 7

Using newly released detailed data on absence from school, we find a ‘Friday effect’—children are much less likely to attend schools in England on Fridays. We use daily level data across the whole of England and find that this pattern holds for different schools and for different types of absence, including illness‐related authorised and unexplained unauthorised absence. The Friday absence rate is 1.5 percentage points (20%) higher relative to th…

  • The servant of god as a proactive manager

Open Access•Muner Daliman, Jonathan James et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2023

Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life have died in Indonesia from Covid−19; work practices have been disrupted and various changes have occurred, including the sphere of service in churches, foundations, schools, and universities. The study aims to understand the concept of the proactive manager as a servant of God: a representative and spokesman for God who is obliged to plan, implement, and evaluate what he/she is doing in carr…

  • Smoking, information, and education

    Open Access•Jonathan James•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2023•Referencias: 5

On March 7, 1962 the Royal College of Physicians published a report entitled Smoking and Health that made the causal link between smoking and lung cancer clear and explicit. Using a historical data set that contains information on smoking from 1958 to 1965, I find a decrease in smoking for those with more schooling after the report's publication. I do not find a difference in the effect for those with greater access to information (measured by TV…

  • Incentivizing dietary choices among children

    Open Access•Michèle Belot, Jonathan James•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2022•Referencias: 4

This article reviews recent evidence on the effectiveness of using small monetary and non-monetary incentives to encourage children to choose healthier foods. We discuss the rationale for using such incentives from the perspective of behavioral economics, and discuss the controversial aspects of such interventions. In reviewing the evidence, we compare key parameters of incentives schemes, such as their nature (monetary or not), the frequency at …

  • Alcohol Price Floors and Externalities

    Open Access•Marco Francesconi, Jonathan James•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

In May 2018, Scotland introduced a minimum unit price on alcohol. We examine the impact of this policy on traffic fatalities and drunk driving accidents. Using administrative data on the universe of vehicle collisions in Britain and a range of quasi‐experimental modeling approaches, we do not find that the policy had an effect on road crash deaths and drunk driving collisions. The results are robust to several sensitivity exercises. There is no e…

  • Put your FTSE down

    Open Access•Zisen Chen, Jonathan James•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 23

This paper examines the impact of a key source of wealth (the stock market) on road traffic collisions. Using data on over 2 million road accidents we do not find a linear relationship between stock prices and road crashes (fatal or otherwise) in Great Britain. However, we do find a V-shaped effect - collisions respond to the absolute change in stock market returns. The results are robust to a series of falsification exercises that potentially su…

  • The Path to College Education

Esteban Aucejo, Jonathan James•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

This paper studies the formation of math and verbal skills during compulsory education and their impact on adult outcomes. We introduce a novel method to estimate dynamic, nested CES production functions. Using a rich panel database that follows a cohort of students in England from elementary school to university, we find that the production functions of math and verbal skills are inherently different, where cross-effects are only present in the …

  • Murderer vs investigator

Jonathan James, Eric Beauregard•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2020

The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with the duration of criminal investigations and determine whether these factors influence the seriality of sexual murderers. To this end, data on the investigation of 62 sexual homicides (homicides committed by a serial sexual murderer = 24; homicides committed by a nonserial sexual murderer = 38), were analyzed. Organized behaviors, typical of serial sexual murderers, were not a…

  • Liquid Assets? the Short-Run Liabilities of Binge Drinking

    Open Access•Marco Francesconi, Jonathan James•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 83

We estimate the effect of binge drinking on road accidents, accident and emergency (A&E) attendances and arrests using a variety of unique English data and a two-sample instrumental variables estimation procedure. Drinking $10+$ units of alcohol in a single session increases road accidents by 18.6%, injury-related A&E attendances by 6.6% and arrests by 71%. The marginal increase from eight to $10+$ alcoholic units implies nearly 6,100 extra road …
