EU Space Governance at the Threshold of A New Era
This introductory article to the special issue “EU Space Governance at the Threshold of a New Era” explores the European Union's evolving role as a strategic actor in space. It argues that the EU is undergoing a fundamental shift from a regulatory to a security‐oriented approach, driven by institutional consolidation, technological ambition, and geopolitical pressures—particularly following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The article is divide…
A policy and quantitative analysis of U.S. climate policy from a global perspective
We analyze a recent significant shift in United States (US) climate policy focusing on a landmark law: the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). To put the IRA in context, we adopt a three‐pronged approach. First, we describe the portfolio of economic policies available to address climate change, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages in an intuitive manner. Second, we reflect on US climate policies prior to the IRA and compare them to those of…
The EU 's efforts to uphold the international rules‐based order
It is commonplace today to state that the international rules‐based order is in decline, or at least severely under threat. The European Union has been a steadfast self‐proclaimed defender of such order, with a strong commitment to multilateralism, the United Nations, and international law based on its founding treaties. This contribution asks how deep and consistent the EU's choice for multilateralism is and how the Union is coping with the chal…
Temporary trade regulations amidst the Covid ‐19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine
This article consists of a detailed survey of the trade regulations adopted during the COVID‐19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine. It analyses how trade policymakers have responded to unforeseen geopolitical events and how their responses and the scope of these measures have differed depending on the nature of the event. Based on the International Trade Centre's databases of temporary trade measures, we found that 407 COVID‐19‐related and 189 …
Governance and policy implications of the Inflation Reduction Act
This paper examines the US 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) alongside the EU's Net‐Zero Industry Act (NZIA) and Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) of 2023. We analyze their differential approaches to accelerating investment in clean technology, enhancing energy security and fortifying supply chains. Both regions share the objective of diminishing reliance on Chinese dominance in clean industries. The US seeks to stimulate private investment prim…
The European Union and the pursuit of global governance in a multi‐polar, fractured world
It is said that the liberal, rules-based international order that was constructed in the ‘West’ during the Pax Americana following World War II, and which was successfully extended during the 1990s following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, is now seriously under threat—for many reasons. These include the war launched against Iraq in 2003 by the United States (US) and its allies; China's search for alternative institutions for international c…
Our Common Agenda and its implementation
This paper provides an introduction to this Special Issue on the United Nations report Our Common Agenda. The report, for which the Secretary‐General consulted widely, contains around 90 proposals and recommendations, propagating solutions at the national, regional and global levels and across four broad areas: (i) renewed solidarity between peoples and future generations in order to strengthen social cohesion, (ii) a new social contract anchored…
Tools and data for the analysis of gender policies
One of the targets of the UN's Our Common Agenda Report is placing women at the centre. In this paper, we propose a three‐step methodology for the analysis of gender inequality: (1) we explain how gender gaps are measured and present several indicators of inequality and discrimination against women. Several international institutions are paying close attention to the topic, and we present their main indexes; (2) we show the different ways that ex…
Foreign multinationals in service sectors
We examine the role of foreign multinationals in service sectors in the context of Brexit, which is assumed to induce an increase in different types of barriers: (a) FDI barriers to multinationals in services; (b) non‐tariff barriers to trade; and (c) import tariffs between the UK and the rest of the EU. We use a state‐of‐the‐art Melitz approach in manufactures with multinationals operating in imperfectly competitive service sectors in a multireg…
Judicialization of access to medicines in four Latin American countries
The results suggest that applying the adopted theoretical model creates the possibility of identifying critical points to guide policy makers to improve the health systems performances and to control lawsuits for access to medicines
The economic impact of potential migration policies in the UK after Brexit
The bulk of studies which attempt to quantify the effects of Brexit focus on trade issues; however, very few of them have analysed migration. In this paper, we analyse the impact of several migration policies on GDP, GDP per capita, wages, national income and sectoral production in the UK, using what is technically called a general equilibrium analysis. We also analyse the impact at the macroeconomic level on the EU. We find that migration has th…
Towards a theoretical model on medicines as a health need
A CGE Analysis of the Impact of Foreign Direct Investment and Tariff Reform on Female and Male Workers in Tanzania
Multinationals in the Czech Motor Vehicles Industry
This study offers a computable general equilibrium methodology to analyse the involvement of multinationals in the motor vehicles sector in the post-communist Czech Republic. This allows estimating not only the economy-wide impact, but also the sectoral adjustments in a unified framework. The real levels of foreign direct investment received in the motor vehicles sector seem to produce only limited forward and backward linkages. Therefore, gross …
