  • Feasibility of software prompts to support antenatal vaccination decision-making: A cross-sectional study

Open Access•Lily Hornal, Esther Willing et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2026

Objectives: Vaccination in pregnancy is recommended to protect newborn infants against whooping cough, and pregnant people and their infants against influenza. Influenza vaccination is recommended at any time in pregnancy and pertussis vaccination is recommended after 16 weeks gestation. However, some pregnant people are not aware of recommendations or the importance of antenatal vaccination. This study explores the feasibility of adding a target…

  • Typologies of Residential Mobility in Childhood and Associations with Sociodemographic Characteristics: A Prospective Birth Cohort Study in Aotearoa New Zealand

    Open Access•Bingyu Deng, Geraldine F H Mcleod et al.•ARTICLE•Child Indicators Research•2024•References: 12

Despite documented associations between childhood area-level socioeconomic status (SES), residential mobility and health, studies in this domain rarely use lifecourse study designs. This study examined temporal patterns of four residential mobility typologies based on area-level SES exposure from birth to 16 years. We devised four main residential mobility typologies: advantaged stayers (remaining in high SES areas), disadvantaged stayers (remain…

  • Investigating the spatial and temporal variation of vape retailer provision in New Zealand: A cross-sectional and nationwide study

    Open Access•Isaac Waterman, Lukáš Marek et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•References: 2

Smoking rates have decreased in Aotearoa New Zealand in recent years however, vaping has shown a dramatic upward trend especially among young people; up to 10% of young New Zealanders are now regular vapers. Importantly, the long-term health consequences for their future life are largely unknown. The accessibility of vape retailers is important, particularly in relation to the youths' daily activities and places such as schools where they spend a…

  • Change in the food environment and measured adiposity in adulthood in the Christchurch Health and development birth cohort, Aotearoa, New Zealand: A birth cohort study

    Open Access•Matthew Hobbs, Geraldine F H Mcleod et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This study investigated associations between change in the food environment and change in measured body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS) birth cohort. Our findings suggest that cohort members who experienced the greatest proportional change towards better access to fast food outlets had the slightly larger increases in BMI and WC. Contrastingly, cohort members who experienced th…

  • Examining spatial variation for immunisation coverage in pregnant women: A nationwide and geospatial retrospective cohort study in Aotearoa New Zealand

    Open Access•M Hobbs, Lukáš Marek et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•References: 1

Data from our retrospective cohort study show significant regional variation in maternal immunisation coverage for both influenza and pertussis from 2013 to 2020. Maximal coverage was around 50% in the best performing regions, which means that half of the women who were pregnant (183,737 women) were not protected. In addition, we found significant spatio-temporal variation and clustering of immunisation coverage. Our findings are interactively av…

  • National movement patterns during the Covid-19 pandemic in New Zealand: The unexplored role of neighbourhood deprivation

Open Access•Malcolm Campbell, Lukáš Marek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 8

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has asked unprecedented questions of governments around the world. Policy responses have disrupted usual patterns of movement in society, locally and globally, with resultant impacts on national economies and human well-being. These interventions have primarily centred on enforcing lockdowns and introducing social distancing recommendations, leading to questions of trust and competency around the role of institut…

  • Reconsidering movement and exposure: Towards a more dynamic health geography

    Open Access•Malcolm Campbell, Lukáš Marek et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 60

Acknowledging a paucity of emerging research, and some variation by sub-field, the geographical measures of exposure used in health and medical geography have largely stagnated often focusing on residence-based ('static') conceptualisations to define an individuals mobility or exposure. Detailed spatiotemporal data, such as smartphone data, allow richer understandings of the influence of the environment, or more broadly of place, on individual he…

  • Model of Risk of Exposure to Lyme Borreliosis and Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus-Infected Ticks in the Border Area of the Czech Republic (South Bohemia) and Germany (Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate)

Open Access•Václav Hönig, Pavel Švec et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

In Europe, Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are the two vector-borne diseases with the largest impact on human health. Based on data on the density of host-seeking Ixodes ricinus ticks and pathogen prevalence and using a variety of environmental data, we have created an acarological risk model for a region where both diseases are endemic (Czech Republic-South Bohemia and Germany-Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate). The data on…

  • The Crisis Map of the Czech Republic: The nationwide deployment of an Ushahidi application for disasters

Open Access•Jiří Pánek, Lukáš Marek et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2017•References: 16

Crisis mapping is a legitimate component of both crisis informatics and disaster risk management. It has become an effective tool for humanitarian workers, especially after the earthquake in Haiti in 2010. Ushahidi is among the many mapping platforms on offer in the growing field of crisis mapping, and involves the application of crowdsourcing to create online and interactive maps of areas in turmoil. This paper presents the Crisis Map of the Cze…

  • Using a fuzzy inference system to delimit rural and urban municipalities in the Czech republic in 2010

Open Access•Vít Pászto, Alžběta Brychtová et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

Due to the suburbanisation process, it is becoming more difficult to properly define rural and urban areas in the Czech Republic. This delimitation problem has been intensively studied in Europe, including the Czech Republic, for decades, but only so-called ‘crisp’ rules have been set for the categorisation of urban and rural. This is no longer satisfactory because of substantial population movements. Our research focuses on applying fuzzy set th…
