West London Healthy Home and Environment (WellHome) Study
The relationship between indoor air quality and public health remains under-researched. WellHome is a transdisciplinary community-based study that will engage with residents to co-design feasible and acceptable research to quantify air pollution exposure in 100 homes in West London and examine its potential to exacerbate asthma symptoms in children. Sampling strategies such as using air quality monitors and passive samplers placed in kitchens, ch…
The impact of Covid-19 on acute psychiatric admissions for first and repeated episode psychosis
BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence of the longer-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on acute admissions for psychosis in the UK. AIMS: We examined the impact of COVID-19 on rates of admissions for first and repeated episode psychosis, and changes in patient profile and seasonal patterns, over a period of 12 months. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective case note review of all patients admitted with a primary psychosis (F20-29 ICD 10 diagnosis…
Impact of the first national Covid-19 lockdown on referral of women experiencing domestic violence and abuse in England and Wales
We show that the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 led to decline in referrals to DVA services. Our findings suggest an association between decline in referrals to DVA services for women experiencing DVA and prolonged periods of systemic closure proxied here by both the first COVID-19 national lockdown or school holidays. This highlights the need for future planning to provide adequate access and support for people experiencing DVA during future national…

Patients’, Carers’, and the Public’s Perspectives on Electroconvulsive Therapy
Aims and Method: The aim of this study was to present patients', carers', and the public's perspectives on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) through a narrative review of the literature. Results: People's perspectives on ECT are often negative due to media and Internet portrayal. Perspectives are influenced by risks, short-term side effects, and the most commonly reported longer-term side effect: memory loss. However, many patients do not report me…
Protocol for a cluster randomised control trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of treatment for latent tuberculosis infection in recent migrants within primary care
NCT03069807, March 2017, registered retrospectively
Randomised controlled trial and economic evaluation of a task-based weight management group programme
ISRCTN ISRCTN45820471 . Registered 12/10/2012 (retrospectively registered)
Implementation of the Identification and Referral to Improve Safety programme for patients with experience of domestic violence and abuse
Identification and Referral to Improve Safety (IRIS) is a training and support programme to improve the response to domestic violence and abuse (DVA) in general practice. Following a pragmatic cluster-randomised trial, IRIS has been implemented in over 30 administrative localities in the UK. The trial and local evaluations of the IRIS implementation showed an increase in referrals from general practice to third sector DVA services with a variatio…
Improving the healthcare response to domestic violence and abuse in primary care
This is the first interrupted time series analysis of an intervention to improve the health care response to domestic violence. The findings will characterise the impact of IRIS implementation outside a trial setting and its suitability for national implementation in the United Kingdom
Standards for Reporting Implementation Studies (StaRI) Statement
Implementation studies are often poorly reported and indexed, reducing their potential to inform initiatives to improve healthcare services. The Standards for Reporting Implementation Studies (StaRI) initiative aimed to develop guidelines for transparent and accurate reporting of implementation studies. Informed by the findings of a systematic review and a consensus-building e-Delphi exercise, an international working group of implementation scie…
Attitudes to participating in a birth cohort study, views from a multiethnic population
BACKGROUND: Recruitment to birth cohort studies is a challenge. Few studies have addressed the attitudes of women about taking part in birth cohort studies particularly those from ethnic minority groups. OBJECTIVE: To seek the views of people from diverse ethnic backgrounds about participation in a proposed birth cohort examining the impact of infections. DESIGN AND SETTING: Eight focus groups of pregnant women and mothers of young children took …
The effects of vitamin D2 or D3supplementation on glycaemic control and related metabolic parameters in people at risk of type 2 diabetes

Developing European guidelines for training care professionals in mental health promotion
The development of generic guidelines based on key quality criteria for training health and social care professionals in mental health promotion should contribute in a significant way to implementing policy in this important area
Identification and Referral to Improve Safety (Iris) of women experiencing domestic violence with a primary care training and support programme
Oedipus
Background South Asians with asthma experience much higher morbidity than whites with asthma in the UK. They also experience worse follow-up in primary care after hospitalisation compared to the white population. Previous trials in mixed ethnicity populations in the US and Europe suggest that: (a) an asthma specialist nurse intervention can reduce unscheduled asthma care; (b) education for physicians can lead to improvements in their patients' as…
Collaborative working within UK NHS secondary care and across sectors for COPD and the impact of peer review
The data come from the first randomised controlled trial of organisational peer review, adding to research into UK health service collaborative work, which has had a more restricted focus on inter-professional relations. NCROP peer review may only modestly improve collaboration but these data suggest it might be more effective than top-down exhortations to change when collaboration both across and within organisations is required
Lifelong learning for all? Policies, barriers and practical reality for a socially excluded group
Lifelong learning is recognized as an important tool to reduce social exclusion, but out of the many investigations into the provision of lifelong learning in Europe none has yet sought to examine the specific situation of mental health care service users. This study examines the provision of lifelong learning for this disadvantaged group; it identifies current policies and explores the access to, and nature of, lifelong learning practices for me…

Is patient involvement possible when decisions involve scarce resources? A qualitative study of decision-making in primary care
Greater patient involvement has become a key goal of health care provision. This study explored the way in which general practitioners (GPs) in the UK manage the dual responsibilities of treating individual patients and making the most equitable use of National Health Service (NHS) resources in the context of the policy of greater patient involvement in decision-making. We undertook a qualitative study incorporating a series of interviews and foc…
