Association between Helping Behaviors and Epigenetic Aging
Background Prosocial behaviors such as volunteering and informal helping have been associated with positive health outcomes, but their links with biological aging remain underexplored, particularly across cultural contexts. The United States and Northern Ireland provide distinct social and institutional contexts for helping behaviors, allowing us to examine whether associations between volunteering, informal helping, and biological aging are cont…
Does volunteering reduce epigenetic age acceleration among retired and working older adults? Results from the Health and Retirement Study
Lived experiences of personal growth among the oldest old
The pragmatist philosophical perspective deems it important to evaluate the experience of personal growth in terms of its practical consequences. Psychological literature has shown decreased levels of personal growth in later life, but less is known about how the oldest old continue or cease to develop themselves. This interdisciplinary study aims to expand the discourse on personal growth by providing narrative examples of how the oldest old cul…
The Interdependent Forces of Local Growth
Perspectives in human ecology and political economy present local growth as a syndrome of interdependent changes happening over time within municipalities. This quantitative study examines the reciprocal relationship between three core concepts of growth: employment, land development, and migration. To assess these associations across the United States, covering the years 2001–2011, we merge county-level data (n = 3,108) from three sources: USA C…
Volunteering, Subjective Sleep Quality, and Chronic Inflammation
Studies indicate that the benefits of volunteering may extend to biological risk factors in disease development including chronic inflammation, though the pathway through which volunteer activity predicts chronic inflammation remains unclear. The current project focuses on the link between volunteering and C-reactive protein (CRP) as a measure of chronic inflammation, while paying a particular attention to sleep quality as a pathway. Using panel …
Lost Touch? Implications of Physical Touch for Physical Health
These findings highlight the importance of finding safe ways to incorporate physical touch, even in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic
Human, social and cultural predictors of productive activities in later life
While considerable scholarly attention has been given to factors influencing productive activity, less is known about how multiple forms of resources predict the maintenance or initiation of such activity over time. Using two-wave panel data of older adults from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), the study investigated the relationship between measures of capital and changes in multiple types of productive activity. Find…
The Unique Nature of Depression and Anxiety among College Students with Adverse Childhood Experiences
Race/ethnicity and foster youth outcomes
Redefining generativity
Scholars in diverse disciplines have studied and used the concept of generativity, originally introduced in psychology as a midlife development task. However, a review of this multidisciplinary literature in generativity revealed several issues—the lack of a cohesive conceptual definition, incompatibility between a conceptual definition and measurements, and varying applications of the model, necessitating a new direction for further conceptual d…
Direct and Indirect Pathways From Social Support to Health
The growing number of older adults with an aging population urgently calls for a greater understanding of factors influencing their physical and mental health. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of social support in older adults' health, while specifically focusing on understudied indirect pathways from social support to health
Health benefits of religion among Black and White older adults? Race, religiosity, and C-reactive protein
