  • An experimental investigation of the effects of anticipating regret and relief on intentions and decisions to get the influenza vaccination

    Open Access•Sara Lorimer, Thelma Mccormack et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•References: 47

The results provide the first evidence that prompting participants to anticipate counterfactual relief increases intentions to be vaccinated compared to controls. These findings reinforce claims that the anticipation of both negative and positive decision-related counterfactual emotions may improve health-related decision-making

  • A systemic transformation of an arts and sciences curriculum to nurture inclusive excellence of all students through course-based research experiences

Open Access•Franco Delogu, Michelle Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

Introduction We describe herein a large-scale, multidisciplinary course-based undergraduate research experience program (CRE) developed at Lawrence Technological University (LTU). In our program, all students enrolled in CRE classes participate in authentic research experiences within the framework of the curriculum, eliminating self-selection processes and other barriers to traditional extracurricular research experiences. Methods Since 2014, we…

  • The Landscape of Prehistory

    Open Access•Matthew Johnston, Matthew N Johnston•ARTICLE•Textes et contextes•2022

This paper is part of a larger project investigating how American archaeological work in the Southwest gradually elides ongoing acts of displacing native and Mexican peoples in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War. Some of the earliest American encounters with ruins and abandoned settlements belonging to Ancestral Puebloan civilizations occurred in the context of demarcating the new boundary between Mexico and the United States. For example,…

  • From Brexit to Biden

Open Access•Sara Lorimer, Thelma Mccormack et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2022

Recent claims contrast relief experienced because a period of unpleasant uncertainty has ended and an outcome has materialized (temporal relief)—regardless of whether it is one’s preferred outcome—with relief experienced because a particular outcome has occurred, when the alternative was unpalatable (counterfactual relief). Two studies ( N = 993), one run the day after the United Kingdom left the European Union and one the day after Joe Biden’s i…

  • Relief in everyday life

Agnieszka J Graham, Thelma Mccormack et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2022

Despite being implicated in a wide range of psychological and behavioral phenomena, relief remains poorly understood from the perspective of psychological science. What complicates the study of relief is that people seem to use the term to describe an emotion that occurs in two distinct situations: when an unpleasant episode is over, or upon realizing that an outcome could have been worse. This study constitutes a detailed empirical investigation…

  • Gendered violence and sexualized representations in video games

    Open Access•Liam Cross, Linda K Kaye et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This research explored how gender portrayals in video games affect gender-related attitudes. Two hundred participants from the United Kingdom and Malaysia participated across three experiments, where the appearance and behaviour of video game characters were manipulated with regard to target (enemy) gender (Study 1), sexually explicit attire (Study 2) and level of character agency (Study 3). We found minimal evidence that exposure to gender-stere…

  • Stories of Madness

    Matthew S Johnston, Matthew Johnston•THESIS•2019•References: 50

Old and present mental health systems tend to emphasize mental health service users as passive recipients of psychiatric care, which suppresses the idea that people who experience serious mental illness are able to comprehend their own sickness and recovery and therefore engage psychiatric experts about their care. This dissertation seriously interrogates the ways in which those who experience serious mental illness become agential, resist some o…
