Meanings of Breast Cancer Survivorship Among Members of Ethnically-Identified Support Groups
Research on both cancer survivorship and support needs has been limited in its attention to survivors from culturally-diverse communities. This study examined the perspectives of members and leaders of ethnically-identified breast cancer support groups regarding the meanings and expectations attached to survivorship. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 African American and Latina survivors in Central Florida. Participant narratives …
Ethnicity and cultural models of recovery from breast cancer
Recovery narratives describe the culturally shared understandings about the ideal or desirable way to recover from an illness experience. This paper examines ethnic differences in recovery narratives among women participating in breast cancer support groups in Central Florida, USA. It compares groups serving African-American, Latina, and European American women, with the objective of better understanding the appeal of ethnic-specific illness supp…

Indigenization of Illness Support Groups in Haiti
This paper examines the process of indigenization within peer support groups for Haitian women living with the chronic physical impairment of lymphatic filariasis. Five support groups established in a coastal community were studied over a period of three years to understand the adaptation of the Western illness support group model to the local cultural milieu. Unlike most support groups in affluent settings, the Haitian women showed minimal inter…

Cultural Models of Illness and Recovery in Breast Cancer Support Groups
In an ethnographic study of breast cancer support groups for white women, the authors describe the cultural model of illness and recovery espoused by the groups and examine contested areas that might influence participation. Through analysis of interviews, observation at meetings, and program documents, they develop a model of group culture that includes five components: recovery narrative, group metaphors, perceived benefits, group processes, an…

Arrested Pregnancy Syndrome in Haiti
This report describes findings from a national survey of pregnant women in Haiti regarding the social epidemiology of pedisyon (perdition), or "arrested pregnancy syndrome," a condition believed to be associated with infertility. Data collected on mortality of respondents' sisters were used to indirectly measure the prevalence of this culture-bound syndrome in the adult female population and to compare its distribution in urban and rural areas. P…
Social and psychological costs of preventive child health services in Haiti
Much of the research on determinants of health service utilization has focused on economic and cognitive variables which influence preventative health behavior. Our ethnographic study of maternal perceptions of the barriers and incentives to immunization use in Haiti underscores the importance of 'hidden' social and psychological costs of utilization, such as embarrassment, fear, child care difficulties, and competing demands on maternal time. Fi…
Group interview methods in community health research
Scholarly development of group interview techniques within the social sciences has lagged behind the rapid popularization of this method. This article offers conceptual clarification regarding different types of group interviews and analyzes case examples to highlight important methodologic issues in the application of group interviews to community health research. Selected problem areas and desirable future directions in the refinement of group …

Maternal Time Allocation in Relation to Kind and Domain of Primary Health Care
In this article I review research questions and findings in the area of maternal time allocation and child health and nutrition as an introduction to more general issues related to time allocation and primary health care. I present an organizing framework for thinking about primary health care activities which focuses on the kind of care required (prevention, management) and the domain in which it takes place (home, clinic, community). I hypothes…

Innovation Among Haitian Healers
While some attention has been given to official programs for incorporating traditional healers into health care delivery, few studies have addressed the independent adoption of modern medical techniques by folk practitioners. This paper presents findings from a study of knowledge and use of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for childhood diarrhea among four categories of Haitian healers (midwives, herbalists, shamans, and injectionists). Drawing upo…

Locus of Illness Control
A comparative study of rural Haitian and southern Appalachian health beliefs revealed significant differences both within and between groups regarding perceived control over illness. Data consisted of scores (N = 293) on the Locus of Illness Control Scale, a 15-item forced-choice instrument designed to include two subscales, one focused on illness prevention, the other on cure. Both cultural groups scored more externally on the cure dimension tha…
