Factors associated with increased preparedness for future bushfires after exposure to a severe bushfire in Australia
When recurrent hazards are exacerbated by climate change, the recovery process from one hazard is closely linked to the preparedness for subsequent events. This study investigated associations of long-term bushfire preparedness after previous bushfire exposure, focusing on the Protective Action Decision Model and considering mental health as an additional explanatory variable. Participants included a sample from the Beyond Bushfire study which wa…
Study protocol
BACKGROUND: Problem anger after experiencing trauma is a common mental health issue. Shift is a new cognitive-behavioral based app, co-designed with users and experts, that works by prompting users to report their current anger state, and delivering personalized support to manage anger accordingly. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate whether prompting users to engage with Shift modules tailored to their in-the-moment anger state, a…
Reflection to Resilience
We explored how emerging adults engaged in self-focused attention during stressors and whether specific forms of self-focus may enhance resilience capacities. We examined two forms: maladaptive ruminative thought and potentially adaptive non-ruminative self-reflection. Despite extensive research on rumination, the resilience-related role of non-ruminative self-reflection is less understood. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we analysed 44 interv…

Problematic anger among military personnel after combat deployment
Background Problematic anger, characterized by excessive frequency, intensity, and duration of anger which causes substantial emotional distress and functional interference, poses a marked challenge in military populations. Despite its importance, research on this topic is limited. This study contributes to the literature by exploring problematic anger in a large sample of Norwegian military personnel who served in NATO missions in Afghanistan. M…
Towards a Holistic Model of Care for Moral Injury
Police members can be exposed to morally transgressive events with potential for lasting psychosocial and spiritual harm. Through interviews with police members and police chaplains across Australia and New Zealand, this qualitative study explores the current role that police chaplains play in supporting members exposed to morally transgressive events. The availability of chaplains across police services and the close alignment between the suppor…
Understanding the temporal dynamics of problem anger using sequence analysis
Problem anger is a common, and potentially destructive mental health issue in trauma-affected populations, affecting up to 30% of veteran and military populations. Problem anger is associated with a range of psychosocial and functional difficulties and elevated risk of harm to self and others. Increasingly, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is being used to understand the microlevel dynamics of emotions, and this information is valuable to in…

Impact of a Pilot Peer-Mentoring Empowerment Program on Personal Well-Being for Migrant and Refugee Women in Western Australia
The Empowerment and Peer Mentoring of Migrant and Refugee Women study (EMPOWER) examined the effectiveness of a participatory, peer mentoring program specifically tailored for migrant and refugee women to build ability, confidence, and knowledge to seek employment, a known contributor to mental health and wellbeing. Female migrant mentors ( n = 21) supported five cohorts of mentees ( n = 32), predominantly from Middle Eastern and Asian background…
Testing the Feasibility and Potential Impact of a Mindfulness-Based Pilot Program in Urban School Youth
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) could be effective in engaging children and reducing childhood obesity risk. The purpose of this study was to test feasibility, fidelity, and potential impact of a pilot MBI in urban school youth. A two-group quasi-experimental study was conducted in a Harlem, New York school. Participants comprised 51 students (ages 9-12, 54% female, 85% African American/Black). The experimental (E) group ( n = 26) particip…
Health Service Interventions for Intimate Partner Violence among Military Personnel and Veterans
IPV is a significant concern among active duty (AD) military personnel or veterans, and there is a need for initiatives to address violence perpetrated by such personnel, and IPV victimisation in military and veteran-specific contexts. The aim of this paper was to provide an overview of major IPV intervention approaches and evidence in military and veteran-specific health services. A scoping review was conducted involving a systematic search of a…
Regional Research-Practice-Policy Partnerships in Response to Climate-Related Disparities
Although climate change poses a threat to health and well-being globally, a regional approach to addressing climate-related health equity may be more suitable, appropriate, and appealing to under-resourced communities and countries. In support of this argument, this commentary describes an approach by a network of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to promoting climate-related health equity in Small Island Developing States an…
Mental Health Reform
The social, health, and economic burden of mental health problems in the veteran community is heavy. Internationally, the array of services and support available to veterans and their families are extensive but vary in quality, are often disconnected, complex to navigate, and lack clear coordination. This paper describes a conceptual framework to guide the design and implementation of a system of services and supports to optimize the mental healt…
Bourdieu’s contribution to psychoanalytic thinking in the context of research
This article explores the added value that the application of the conceptual tools of French sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu (1930–2002), has the potential to bring to psychoanalytic thinking. Drawing on evidence derived from our individual studies, we aim to demonstrate how Bourdieu’s theories can contribute to our understanding of workers’ occupational choices and add to our knowledge of the way organisational cultures combine with personal attrib…
Cross-lagged analyses of anger and PTSD symptoms among veterans in treatment
Anger influences change in specific PTSD symptoms over time among military veterans in treatment and may interfere with treatments for PTSD. Veterans who present to clinical services with anger problems may benefit from anger interventions prior to commencing trauma-focused treatment. The findings have additional implications for conceptual models of the relationship between anger and PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reser…
Efficacy of Psychoactive Drugs for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Stressors and Supports in Postdisaster Recovery
Many studies show that long-term poor mental health outcomes for disaster-affected people are predicted by postdisaster stressors. Despite this finding, existing recovery frameworks vary in how these stressors are conceptualised. This paper examines community members’ subjective perceptions of what they found problematic and useful in their recoveries after the Australian 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, and considers them in the light of these fra…
The impact of received social support on posttraumatic growth after disaster
This study calls attention to the importance of enhancing the quality of help provided to disaster survivors because simply "more" support is not necessarily better. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
An Open Label Pilot Study of a Brief Psychosocial Intervention for Disaster and Trauma Survivors
This study provides preliminary evidence that the delivery of the SOLAR program after disaster by trained, frontline workers with little or no mental health experience is feasible, acceptable, safe, and beneficial in reducing psychological symptoms and impairment among disaster survivors. Randomized controlled trials of the SOLAR program are required to advance evidence of its efficacy
Magnitude of problematic anger and its predictors in the Millennium Cohort
Not only did 1 in 6 respondents report problematic anger, but risk factors were significant even after adjusting for PTSD and MDD, suggesting that problematic anger is more than an expression of these mental health problems. Results identify potential targets of early intervention and clinical treatment for addressing problematic anger in the military and veteran context
Psychiatric comorbidity for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
The comorbidity profiles of veterans in treatment for PTSD can be distinguished by levels of severity and the specific presence or absence of alcohol use problems. Alcohol use problems have discernible implications for treatment in the context of comorbidity. Group treatments for PTSD should consider tailoring interventions to comorbidity profiles. The effect of post-traumatic stress disorder on refugees' parenting and their children's mental health
BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents, who account for most of the world's refugees, have an increased prevalence of psychological disorders. The mental health of refugee children is often associated with the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their caregivers. Despite the potential for refugee caregivers' PTSD to affect child mental health, little evidence exists concerning the underlying mechanisms of this association. This stu…
Understanding the early support needs of survivors of traumatic events
These findings can inform posttrauma intervention development for those at risk of later psychological symptoms. In particular, the results support approaches focusing on promoting activity, supporting social relationships, stress and arousal management, and cognitive restructuring. In addition, future interventions might helpfully target rumination, worry, and reexperiencing symptoms. (PsycINFO Database Record

Conceptualising Post-Disaster Recovery
In the disaster literature, psycho-social recovery is conceptualised typically as the alleviation of traumatic stress, with the alleviation of disaster-related grief as a less prominent part of this. Yet, incorporating grief understandings into recovery conceptualisations post disaster is important. This paper explores these conceptualisations by analysing participants' bereavement experiences following the Black Saturday bushfires. It draws on d…

Lifetime Prevalence of Gender-Based Violence in Women and the Relationship With Mental Disorders and Psychosocial Function
CONTEXT: Intimate partner physical violence, rape, sexual assault, and stalking are pervasive and co-occurring forms of gender-based violence (GBV). An association between these forms of abuse and lifetime mental disorder and psychosocial disability among women needs to be examined. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association of GBV and mental disorder, its severity and comorbidity, and psychosocial functioning among women. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICI…
Using predictive models of behavior change to promote evidence-based treatment for PTSD
While there is a strong evidence base regarding effective treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and an increased number of treatment guidelines available internationally, research indicates that there is significant variation in clinical practice. This study aimed to identify effective ways to promote adoption of trauma-focused interventions in community services offering mental health care to people who have experienced trauma. The …
A multi-level framework to guide mental health response following a natural disaster
Natural disasters can cause significant distress, grief, loss and hardship, and mental health is a key public health issue that needs to be addressed as part of a wider psychosocial response to assist affected communities. Most people who live through a natural disaster, including bereaved individuals, will not require the attention of specialist mental health professionals. In addition, because many people will cope or ‘bounce back’ on their own…
Exploration of Delayed-Onset Posttraumatic Stress Disorder After Severe Injury
OBJECTIVE: The first aim of this work was to conduct a rigorous longitudinal study to identify rates of delayed-onset posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of patients with severe injury. The second aim was to determine what variables differentiated delayed-onset PTSD from chronic PTSD. METHODS: Randomly selected patients with injury who were admitted to four hospitals around Australia were recruited to the study (N = 834) and assessed…

Evaluating Outdoor Therapeutic Programs
There are relatively few published accounts of the effectiveness of outdoor therapeutic programs. Most outdoor programs report favourable outcomes, yet few undertake a methodologically sound program evaluation. Application of a more rigorous evaluation method could improve the contribution that many programs could make to the evidence base regarding the effects and outcomes of outdoor programs. In recognition of this, we propose a practical and r…
The mediating role of anger in the relationship between PTSD symptoms and impulsivity
Research indicates a significant relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anger (Olatunji, Ciesielski, & Tolin, 2010; Orth & Wieland, 2006). Individuals may seek urgent coping to deal with the distress of anger, which is a mobilizing and action-oriented emotion (Novaco & Chemtob, 2002); possibly in the form of impulsive actions consistent with impulsivity's association with anger (Milligan & Waller, 2001; Whiteside & Lynam, 2…
