  • Applying CFIR to assess multi-level barriers to PrEP delivery in rural South Africa

    Open Access•Deborah Baron, Hannah H Leslie et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•References: 34

Despite established efficacy for oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing HIV incidence, multi-level barriers within the health system, clinics, and the processes that shape practice have hindered service delivery and subsequent population-level effects. We applied the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to assess the context of PrEP delivery for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in rural South Africa and ident…

  • Prevalence and Risk Factors of PrEP Use Stigma Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Johannesburg, South Africa and Mwanza, Tanzania Participating in the Empower Trial

Open Access•Richard J Munthali, Anne Stangl et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa may benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), yet stigma may limit PrEP acceptance and continuation. We examined factors associated with PrEP use stigma among 307 participants of the EMPOWER trial (2016-2018), an unblinded randomized controlled trial among HIV-negative, AGYW, aged 16-24, in South Africa and Tanzania. The 6-item, brief-PrEP use stigma scale (B-PSS) had high internal…

  • Exploring the feasibility and acceptability of integrating screening for gender-based violence into HIV counselling and testing for adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania and South Africa

Open Access•on behalf of the EMPOWER study team, M Colombini et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Most stakeholders found GBV screening acceptable and feasible. Key principles that should be in place for young women to be asked safely about GBV during HIV counselling and testing included respect for confidentiality, a youth-friendly and non-judgmental environment, and a functioning referral network

  • Disclosure of PrEP use by young women in South Africa and Tanzania

    F Scorgie, Nomhle Khoza et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2021

Investigating how young women disclose oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use is important given evidence that disclosure is associated with higher adherence. We report qualitative results on PrEP disclosure among young women in South Africa and Tanzania who participated in a PrEP demonstration project (EMPOWER). In total, 81 in-depth interviews were conducted with 39 young women aged 16-24 years-25 from Johannesburg and 14 from Mwanza-at appro…

  • From fear to resilience

Open Access•F Scorgie, Deborah Baron et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Adolescents in Hillbrow commonly witnessed and had direct experience of many forms of violence in their environment, and these experiences differed markedly by gender.
