  • The Date of Beverley Minster and its Role in the Development of Northern Gothic in the Late 12th and Early 13th Centuries

Open Access•Stuart Harrison, Stuart A Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the British…•2023

Drawing on close archaeological examination, a study of masons’ marks and especially new dendrochronological data, this article defends and develops Christopher Norton’s argument, published in 2009, that Gothic construction at Beverley Minster commenced soon after a well-documented fire in 1188. This dating was widely accepted until the 1860s, but since then there has been widespread consensus amongst scholars that Gothic construction at Beverley…

  • Commemorations: From Dusk to Dawn

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips•ARTICLE•Oxford Literary Review•2022

This essay attempts to answer the question of how one commemorates the event of thinking by raising it in relation to some commemorative texts. Derrida’s Demeure, Athènes provides an exemplary point of departure, but the seminars concerned with the death penalty raise the stakes in readings that deeply trouble an inheritance fixated on the determination of death, with Socrates and Oedipus as ancient figures of an enduring culture. The essay touch…

  • The Accident in Being: Michel Serres on the Emergence of the Object

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips•ARTICLE•Media theory•2021

Michel Serres’s work traces a historical transition where technologies of mediation replace a framework of life formerly managed by an economics of production. Readings of Serres tend to affirm in this transition the opening to an ecology (econarratology or media-ecology) or towards a replacement of the human in trans- or post-humanism. In this article I analyse the terms of the transition in Serres’s affirmation of a philosophy grounded in the p…

  • The association of infant temperament and maternal sensitivity in preterm and full‐term infants

Open Access•Suzanne Vaccaro, Davood Tofighi et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2021•References: 86

Infants who experience sensitive caregiving are at lower risk for numerous adverse outcomes. This is especially true for infants born preterm, leading them to be more susceptible to risks associated with poorer quality caregiving. Some research suggests that preterm and full‐term infants differ on temperament, which may contribute to these findings. This study aimed to investigate associations between infant temperament (negative emotionality, po…

This introduction to the special section 'The Half-Life of the Avant-Garde: 50 Years On from 50 Years On' explains why the section is conceived to look back at the century since the First World War. It is designed to offer ways of rethinking the concept and the role of the anniversary, where the First World War constitutes the memorialized event. The organization of the section follows the movement between often hidden or submerged forms of conti…

The nephew of William Smith, John Phillips (1800–1874) was also an influential geologist. Professor of Geology at Oxford, and in part founder of the Oxford University Museum, he notably proposed the three main eras: the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Originally published between 1865 and 1870, this monograph was the first to attempt a review of British belemnites, and was influenced in part by the author's youthful studies of the Yorkshire Ju…

  • Force and Vulnerability in Philosophy and Science

    John Phillips•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Taking as a starting point the challenge in finding ways of treating autoimmune disorders, this article constructs a hypothetical frame for enquiry that explores the connections between bioscience and, in a different register, the techniques of cultural memory. Putting the question of the long development and inheritance of immune functions (phylogenesis) in touch with that of cultural inheritance (epiphylogenesis), the article questions lines of…

The article focuses in particular on the problem of infrastructure in relation to questions of urban politics and especially remarks on the emergence of a kind o…

  • Postcolonial Urbanism: Southeast Asian Cities and Global Processes

EMMA REISZ, Ryan Bishop et al.•BOOK•Postcolonial Urbanism•2013

In the market-driven cities of contemporary Singapore and Malaysia, gardens are usually understood by urban geographers as semiotic voids. Gardens are seen as urban lungs where air can circulate, necessary to the survival of the city as a whole, but deficient in internal structure and divorced from the city’s fundamental economic functions—they are located within the physical space of the city, but outside its conceptual space. 1 This view was bo…

  • The Urban Problematic

    Open Access•R Bishop, John W P Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 13

This article, which introduces the special section on The Urban Problematic, takes as its starting point the ways in which categories associated with the 'urban' have broken down, such that the once singular and coherent concept 'city' has disintegrated in certain ways: the notion has been demythologized, so that representations of the city must now be regarded as partial and invested; and cities themselves have become opaque and unpredictable bo…

  • On Topology

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Recent arguments asserting a topological turn in culture also identify a range of topologically informed interventions in social and cultural theory. Talk of a topological turn evokes both the enduring interest that the field of mathematics presents and the business of analysis in the cultural sphere. This article questions the novelty of this 'becoming topological of culture' and digs into a deeper historicity in order to identify the trends tha…

  • Bios, Polis and the Autoimmune

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips•ARTICLE•Science Technology and Society•2012

Discourses about immunological structure have been historically productive in both the biological sciences and in political theory. In this article I argue that a deeper historical structure underlies both kinds of discourse and I attempt to draw some implications from this in relation to the current state of biomedical research in Singapore. Taking the establishment of Singapore’s dedicated biomedical research institution, Biopolis, as a startin…

  • The Poetic Thing (On Poetry and Deconstruction)

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips•ARTICLE•Oxford Literary Review•2011

Deconstruction has sometimes been championed as if it was a kind of poetic (as opposed to say analytic) writing. The identification has encouraged some to relegate deconstruction to the shadows or sidelines, the sideshows, of serious philosophy. Both tendencies are foolish. There nonetheless remains the question of the relation between two enigmatic discourses: poetry and deconstruction; some deep complicity is surely implied. Reading in the text…

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This piece presents the work of academics and architects in a collaborative venture. It provides an architectural design and a series of statements towards the hypothetical creation of an unconventional city centre in the Chinese city of Shenzhen. The idea is to create a linear university that would run the 20-kilometer length of the Shenzhen Strip: the 20K university. The contributors outline, in the diversity of their idioms, a complex spatial …

  • Secrecy and Transparency: An Interview with Samuel Weber

    Open Access•John W P Phillips, John Phillips•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 1

In this interview Samuel Weber proposes a rethinking of the relation of secrecy to transparency and outlines some of the forms it takes, while considering certain of its implications for current social, political and epistemological contexts. He begins by questioning the opposition itself, suggesting that we will have to learn to be more at home with the secret and that the demand for transparency must be radically rethought and complicated. He a…

Taking the publication in English of several works by Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière as its point of departure, this review article attempts to outline what may be at stake in reading these two authors together. Looking especially at the works on politics and on aesthetics (particularly Badiou's Handbook of Inaesthetics and Rancière's Politics of Aesthetics ), the article also draws on other major texts by these authors as a way of clarifying …

In this article we outline the ways in which questions of language have both revealed problems with conceptions of knowledge and suggested constructive ways of addressing those problems. Having examined the limitations of instrumental notions of language, we outline some alternatives, especially those developed from the middle of the 19th and throughout the 20th century. We locate forceful and influential philosophical interventions in the writin…

Focusing upon the use of the footnote in Histoire de Juliette , this article builds upon earlier work on Sade's footnotes, notably by Andreas Pfersmann and Lucienne Frappier-Mazur, and draws upon the narratological perspectives of Gérard Genette and the Derridean theory of the supplement, to examine how the note provides authorial support for the discourse of the main text, and so may be said to form an integral part of it, rather than a mere per…

We focus primarily on unmanned combat air vehicles that have long been part of the Air Force's R&D plans, but have now apparently found an event that justifies their production and deployment. What, we wonder, will be the effe…

  • Manufacturing Emergencies

    R Bishop, John W P Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2002•Cited by: 2

The article examines the distinction between the state of emergency and the normal state and an inherent undecidability at the base of the distinction. We argue that states of emergency arise from strategic sovereign decisions to divide visible from invisible, enemy from ally, underground economy from above-ground, illegitimate war from legitimate war. The capacity to so divide is manifested, for instance, in the technology of air raid sirens in …

In doing so it focuses on the notions of 'indexicality' and the 'practices' by which its repair is achieved. The notion of 'indexicality', in at least some of its statements, is shown to depend on a familiar, but probably erroneous, account of 'meaning', which holds that 'meaning' is deeply connec…

What he rejects is the idea that sociology must be exclusively humanistic. While agreeing with what we take to be the aim of his paper, that is, to stress the strengths and importance of both modes of explanation as opposed to the prevailing dogmatic asser…
