The Farmer, the Influencer, and the Labors of Rural Self-Media
The genre of Chinese rural “self-” or “we-media” (zi meiti) has drawn ire for “spectacularizing” the “rural lifescape” for urban consumers of China’s rapidly developing platform economy. This article focuses instead on how the videos of Li Ziqi and Qiaofu Jiumei recenter production as a key visual force in global capitalism. By depicting the dynamic reciprocities between traditionally rural, artisanal or craft-based, and immaterial or affective l…
Big Earths of China
Undergirding China's Belt and Road Initiative's lofty promise of global connectivity are existing connections between the PRC's implementation of planetary-scale observation systems for environmental sustainability and the recognizably nefarious policies of localized, colonial surveillance of Turkic minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). My article examines how the recently alleged genocide in XUAR becomes the afflicted topos…
Pauses, Cuts, and Static Interference
The mergers and separations that shaped the decolonizing third world also made media history. Singapore’s separation from Malaysia on August 9, 1965, after two tumultuous years of union was no exception. Radio and television, which broadcasted the seminal moments, embodied the mergers and separations of media forms—this is a fact overlooked in both national histories and regional media scholarship. Reconfigured with the complex, shifting intersec…
Stone, Jade, Medium
While modern and contemporary narratives of human-machine hybridity have welcomed cybernetic and media-theoretical readings, mythic and premodern tales of human-nonhuman metamorphosis, seen as less technologically inspired precursors, are excluded from such interdisciplinary discussions. Yet, the concept of the posthuman can learn a few things from non-Western literary traditions where premodern myths inform human-machine couplings. This essay ex…

Living and Dying by the Event”
“Living and Dying by the Event” Shaoling Ma (bio) In Aporias, from 1993, Jacques Derrida asks, “What is the event that most arrives? What is the arrivant that makes the event arrive?” (33). This paper wishes to extend the same question to two of Derrida’s 1967 texts, “Structure, Sign and Play” and Speech and Phenomena, in which Derrida dissociates the metaphysical conception of the sign from the prerogative of life and makes of the transformed re…

Undercover Surrealism
This article considers the Undercover Surrealism exhibition curated at London’s Hayward Gallery (from May to July 2006) and reflects on the practices of documentation, archiving and exhibition when the topic of the exhibition, as in this case, is a journal that in its most radical intention was set up to critique the practices of exhibition and documentation. The short and controversial life of Georges Bataille’s Documents unfolds as an often del…
