  • Zimbos Never Die?

Ushehwedu Kufakurinani, Eric Kushinga Makombe et al.•BOOK•Zimbos Never Die?•2023

This book seeks to explore how the Zimbabwean society and its institutions have survived if not succumbed to continuous economic crises in the country. From the 1990s Zimbabwe experienced a sustained economic decline challenged by both internal and external strains. Coupled with internal mis-governance and corruption, the nation plunged into a political and economic crisis which culminated in the second highest world inflation rate for an economy…

  • Shebeens, alcohol and nation-building in Zimbabwe, 1980–1989

    Nathaniel Chimhete•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•2023

In March 1981, the newly elected Zimbabwe government announced that as of May of that year shebeens were required to cease their operations. The announcement ignited a debate not only about the place of alcohol and shebeens in the newly independent “socialist” state, but also about what independence meant, and the kind of state different sections of the population wanted to fashion henceforth. Most scholars who have written about the 1980s emphas…

  • Heinrich’s Chibuku Breweries and the Informalization of the African Beer Industry in Salisbury, Rhodesia, 1962–1979

    Nathaniel Chimhete•ARTICLE•African Economic History•2023

The article focuses on the informalization of the African beer industry in Salisbury, Rhodesia, from the early 1960s to 1979. For a long time, scholars have associated the informalization of the African beer industry with the activities of small-scale operators (shebeen queens and kings). True, African small-scale operators dominated the African informal beer industry, as several scholars have shown. However, this focus on the activities of small…

  • Zimbabwe's Economic Crisis and the Shebeen Sector in Bulawayo, 2007-08

    Open Access•Melody Moyo, Nathaniel Chimhete•ARTICLE•African studies quarterly•2023•References: 1

Between 2000 and 2008 Zimbabwe experienced an economic crisis that reached its peak in 2007 and 2008. Africanists who have written about the informal sector in general and those who have written about the informal sector during periods of economic crises in particular have emphasized the inverse relationship between the formal economy and the expansion of informal sectors: that economic problems in the formal sectors of the economy led to the exp…

  • Prosperity in a crisis economy

    Nathaniel Chimhete•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 15

From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, Tanzania experienced an unprecedented crisis characterized by high inflation, unemployment and the shortage of basic commodities. Interviews with contemporaries and the scanty documentary evidence available show that this crisis did not impede small-scale gold mining industry in Nyamongo, Tarime District. On the contrary, mining in Nyamongo boomed during this period, largely because the price of gold on the …

  • Pasi nemakomoredzi—ii!’ [Down with comrades!]

    Nathaniel Chimhete•ARTICLE•Critical African Studies•2019•References: 7

The paper examines the relationship between Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) guerrilla fighters and civilians in the Gudyanga area, Chimanimani West, from 1975 to 1980. It focuses on how the residents of that area interacted with guerrilla fighters during the war of liberation. In examining the relationship between civilians and guerrilla fighters, the paper follows in the footsteps of scholars, such as Norma Kriger, who emphasize the agenc…

  • Conflict, Livelihoods and Survival among Miners and Farmers in Gweru's Greenvale, 2000-2016

Open Access•Petronella Munyaradzi Munhenzva, Nathaniel Chimhete et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2019

The paper analyses the interface of conflict, livelihoods and survival in a peri-urban region where mining and farming core-exist. We use the case study of Greenvale, a peri-urban area in Gweru, a city in the Midlands Region of Zimbabwe. Gweru is the fourth largest city in the country after Mutare, Bulawayo and Harare. We explore how the co-existence of mining and farming generated conflict, which delayed sustainable livelihoods and maximum benef…

  • African Nationalism, Municipal Beer Outlets and Shebeens in Salisbury, Rhodesia, 1960s-1980

Nathaniel Chimhete•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2018•Cited by: 2

Scholars writing on the alcohol industry in Rhodesia have generally viewed beer drinking in urban areas as a social phenomenon. This has led them to overlook links between beer drinking and politics, yet, in the 1960s and 1970s, politics and beer drinking were intricately linked. This article examines the intersection between nationalism and alcohol drinking in Salisbury, Rhodesia. This approach not only bridges studies on African nationalism and…

  • Gold mining, the Wanyamongo moral economy and neo-liberal economic reforms in Tarime district, Tanzania, 1930s - 2009

    Nathaniel Chimhete•THESIS•2013

This dissertation examines the history of gold mining among the Wanyamongo people of Tarime District from the 1930s to 2009. It argues that the establishment of gold mines in Nyamongo in the early 1930s created intra-community conflicts among the Wanyamongo people. These conflicts divided the community, turning young men against elders and wives against their husbands. This tension rarely reached overt levels during the colonial period, although …
