Estimating the persuasive effects of advertising in presidential primary elections
Presidential primary elections arguably represent the most dynamic campaigns in American politics. Television advertising is a key aspect of strategy that candidates can marshal throughout the campaign. We develop a methodology for measuring the impact of advertising in primary elections that accounts for endogeneity and apply it to the 2000 through 2016 elections. We find that advertisements—both positive and negative—improve the favorability an…
Stalin's Well‐Kept Garden
In a widespread image of the late 1930s the Soviet state is represented as a garden tended by the wise and attentive Stalin. Not only does this garden naturalize the dynamic and multiethnic modern state as a single organic totality, as in Zygmunt Bauman's notion of the totalitarian “gardening state”; the garden also presents the Soviet state as a new ecology (rather than just an economy) based on homologous relations between nature, technology, i…
Preliminary Remarks toward a Formal Understanding of Revolution
In this essay, Oleg Aronson proposes to view the protests of 1968 as a continuation of the social revolutionary processes initiated by the French Revolution. The author interprets revolution not as an event of historical rupture but as a process of long duration (in the sense of Fernand Braudel's longue durée). Signs of such revolution are found beyond the regime of human perception and contemplation, beyond the categories of space and time, in t…
Zounds! Raoul Vaneigem's Negative Tradition
In his essay Robert Bird traces a web of citations that link Zounds' post-punk song "Subvert" to Raoul Vaneigem's Revolution of Everyday Life and, even further, back to Vasilii Rozanov's Apocalypse of Our Times, written in the wake of (and in opposition to) the Russian revolutions of 1917. This history of texts and media not only illustrates the concept of revolutionary tradition but also highlights its negativity, by which the author means its p…

The Poetics of Peat in Soviet Literary and Visual Culture, 1918-1959
One of the sites of socialist construction that grabbed Soviet public attention in the 1920s and 1930s, peat also dramatized the difficulties faced by Soviet artists in devising representational modes appropriate to their new tasks. In the mid-1920s stories by Mikhail Prishvin, Aleksandr Peregudov, and Aleksandr Iakovlev granted a voice to peat workers by augmenting existing literary forms with documentary and agitational methods. In the 1930s, a…

The Cross and the Sickle
Russian Religious Thought
As Russia entered the modern age in the nineteenth century, many intellectuals combined the study of European philosophy with a return to their own traditions, culminating in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and in the religious philosophy of their younger contemporary, Vladimir Soloviev. This book explores central issues of modern religious thought by focusing on the work of Soloviev and three religious philosophers who further developed his…
