  • Black Prometheus

    Jared Hickman•BOOK•Black Prometheus•2016•Cited by: 8

This book addresses the specific conditions under and the pointed implications with which an ancient story about different orders of gods dueling over the fate of humanity became such a prominent fixture of Atlantic modernity. The Prometheus myth, for several reasons—its fortuitous geographical associations with both Africa and the Caucasus; its resonant iconography of bodily suffering; and its longue-duree function as a limit case for a Platonic…

  • The Book of Mormonas Amerindian Apocalypse

    Jared Hickman•ARTICLE•American Literature•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 13

The Book of Mormon is perhaps best known in Americanist circles as a version of the Indians-as-Israelites theory. It features the racialized division of the progeny of the text's founding diasporic Jewish figure, Lehi, into wicked "Lamanites," who are cursed with "a skin of blackness" and were understood by the earliest readers to be the ancestors of Amerindian peoples, and the righteous "Nephites," the fair-skinned narrators of The Book of Mormo…

  • Introduction

    Peter Coviello, Jared Hickman•ARTICLE•American Literature•2014•Cited by: 19•References: 15

the notion that something called "secularization" provides an adequate conceptual framework for the post-Enlightenment movement of bodies and belief, of thought and authority, has come under sustained and multidimensional assault. We have become, as the term goes, postsecular, to the degree we understand those assaults to have been, finally, cumulatively, fatal. It's a fairly noncontroversial position at this point, as stated by Asad way back in 20…

  • "Globalization and the Gods, or the Political Theology of "Race

    Jared Hickman•ARTICLE•Early American literature•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 21

Globalization and the Gods, or the Political Theology of "Race" Jared Hickman (bio) Modernity is getting modernized. In order to explain the world in the early twenty-first century-a transnational world from which religion shows no signs of disappearing-recent scholarship increasingly considers modernity in terms of a long history of globalization whose relativizing effects cannot be equated with "disenchantment."1 In this framework, the colonial…

  • The Theology of Democracy

    Jared Hickman•ARTICLE•The New England Quarterly•2008

Recent events suggest that “democracy” not only functions as a “God-term” in global discourse but carries with it theological assumptions about God's relation to human freedom and history. This essay investigates the theological origins and implications of Anglo-American democratic theory, drawing attention to the instability of the U.S. Christian-republican synthesis
