Pastoral Power
This introduction to this special section of Theory, Culture & Society focuses on the formation of power that Michel Foucault – in a number of texts and lectures from the late 1970s and early 1980s – analyzed under the label of ‘the pastorate’. Stressing the ongoing socio-political relevance of pastoral power, the article outlines some of the ways in which it continues to directly influence and animate an array of secular governmental techniques …
Clinical and Microbiological Characteristics of Deep Neck Abscesses in Pediatrics
As there is currently no consensus on managing deep neck infections in pediatric populations, we report a case series from a large pediatric hospital. Clinical data of patients discharged from Istituto Gaslini-Children's Hospital from January 2014 to June 2020 with peritonsillar, parapharyngeal, or retropharyngeal abscess diagnoses were collected. A total of 59 patients were identified. Patients underwent surgical drainage in 47% of cases. Strept…
Techniques of Finitude
Building and expanding on Foucault's work, this essay interprets pastoral power as a turning point within the long-term history of the care of the self. Through an analysis of early Christian monasticism, it claims that the pastorate emerged out of a re-conceptualization of ancient understandings of human finitude and a correlative transformation of the techniques revolving around it. Pastoral power instantiates a specific way of framing institut…

Ascetic Worlds
Building and expanding on Peter Sloterdijk’s work, in this essay I explore the interrelation between anthropotechnics qua practice of the self and the political sphere, with a view, in particular, to providing a genealogy of some of its recent developments. I first analyse the birth of anthropotechnics within the framework of the axial revolution (Karl Jaspers), as withdrawal and return to a common world bereft of certainty and self-evidence (sec…

The works of Peter Sloterdijk (b. 1947) have become more readily available in recent years to the English-speaking world, 1 and so too has the recognition that his thought represents a major contri
Debt as a Form of Life
This article is a review of two recently translated books by Italian philosopher Elettra Stimilli: The Debt of the Living: Ascesis and Capitalism (Albany: SUNY Press, 2017; translated by Arianna Bove) and Debt and Guilt: A Political Philosophy (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2018; translated by Stefania Porcelli). The essay critically engages with (1) Stimilli’s interpretation of the nexus between ascesis and capitalism; (2) her account of the asc…
The impact of future cities on commuting patterns
Over the next 35 years, the population of Switzerland is expected to grow by 25%. One possible way to accommodate this larger population is to transform smaller cities in Switzerland through the direct intervention of urban planners. In this work, we integrate agent-based simulation models of people flow, mobility and urban infrastructure with models of the electricity and gas systems to examine the increase of the density of existing residential…
Ethics of security
This article analyses the set of ethical questions underlying the emergence of the modern politics of security, as articulated, in particular, in the work of Thomas Hobbes. An ethic is here understood – in line with its ancient philosophical use and the interpretation advanced by authors such as Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot – as a domain of reflections and practices related to the cultivation and conversion of the self ( askēsis, metanoia). T…
Foucault, critique, subjectivity
This article interprets Foucault’s intellectual project by analysing the relation between his understanding of critique and the political conditions of subjectivation out of which it emerged. After reviewing some of the most typical criticisms of Foucault’s work (and especially those maintaining that genealogy can only be rooted in a non-genealogical and universal conception of power), the argument shows in what sense he conceived of critique as …
Herculine Barbin , Mes souvenirs. Histoire d'Alexina/Abel B. (Paris
A century and a half after being written, the journal of Alexina/Abel Barbin continues to glow.Composed in the months before committing suicide (1868), the journal was first published in 1874 as an appendix to a medical study on hermaphroditism, 1 fuelling a heated debate in the scientific community and public opinion of the time. After a long period of oblivion, the text was rediscovered and put into print by Michel Foucault in 1978. 2 Despite th…
