  • Jean Rollin and Terroir

    Open Access•Paul Hegarty•ARTICLE•Nottingham French Studies•2025

Jean Rollin took a break from semi-abstract vampire films in 1978 to make his zombie masterpiece, Les Raisins de la Mort This also marked a departure from gauzily shot female vampires wafting around random French countryside areas Instead it was an overt foray into alterglobal ecocriticism, as it focussed on the danger (death and becoming a zombie) of using modern fertilisers in an attempt to rationalise wine production in the pursuit of economic…

  • Sound Shelter

    Paul Hegarty•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2025•References: 4

This article seeks to track an “ease” of listening back from today’s comforts of playlists, headphone immersion in music, and omnipresent streaming. It reflects on the functions of comforting music such as easy listening that paved the way to today’s networked and distributed homes and subjectivities. Through considerations of how easy listening shapes the domestic interior and experience, the article then moves to join the ideas of Anahid Kassab…

  • Smearing time

    Open Access•Gary Genosko, Paul Hegarty et al.•ARTICLE•Time & Society•2020•References: 5

Since 1972 a leap second has been introduced into global time standardization systems, due to the discrepancy between Coordinated Universal Time and International Atomic Time. Until recently, the leap second has been a consensual, if mildly uncanny adjustment, a para-governmental temporal wobble. Google's explanation of its actions with regard to the insertion of a leap second smeared into its Network Time Protocol servers is couched in terms of …

  • In the Absence of Noise, Nothing Sounds

    Paul Hegarty•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Blanchot took Mallarmé’s “Book” as the paradigm for an artwork that aspired to such excess it could not exist. And yet it partly did, in the form of the poem Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard. For Blanchot, this ultimate literary work acted as a model for a relentless deconstructing not just of what existed but also of that which did not. His emptying theoretical perspective is ideally suited to analyse the phenomenon that is harsh noise …

  • Constructing (in) the `Real' World

    Open Access•Paul Hegarty•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2008•Cited by: 2

Baudrillard's notion of simulation is not that it is a false view of the world, but that it constructs a `real' world, which he identifies as hyperreal. This article argues that we can use architecture to explore this notion, as it is a key part of Baudrillard's career of theorising signification and, later, simulation. From early work on the domestic interior, to the peculiarity of the World Trade Center and the Centre Pompidou, from the spread …

Bataille’s work of the 1930s on the sacred has strong echoes of Walter Benjamin’s writing on space and messianic time. In bringing together Bataille’s theoretical and fictional writings, alongside key Benjamin texts, this article seeks to develop our understanding of a perversely grounded sacred
