  • Minding the Gender Gap

Joann Mossa, Barnali Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2026

  • Addressing machine learning bias to foster energy justice

    Open Access•Chien Chen, Rebecca Napolitano et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • Lockdown lessons

Justine I Blanford, Forrest J Bowlick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 2

We report the findings from two global panel “conversations” that, stimulated by the exceptional coronavirus pandemic of 2020/21, explored the concept of resilience in geographic science teaching and learning. Characteristics of resilient teaching, both in general and with reference to GISc, are listed and shown to be essentially what might in the past have been called good teaching. Similarly, barriers to resilient teaching are explored and stra…

  • Where Is the Provenance? Ethical Replicability and Reproducibility in GIScience and Its Critical Applications

    Jason A Tullis, Bandana Kar•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 23

As replicability and reproducibility (R&R) crises develop within emerging convergent inquiry, ethical use of provenance information is central to the establishment and preservation of trust in critical applications of GIScience and geospatial technologies. Today large volumes of geospatial data are generated at high velocity from satellite sensors and unmanned aircraft systems, citizen sensors, geolocation-based data services, global navigation s…

  • Assessing the Reliability of Relevant Tweets and Validation Using Manual and Automatic Approaches for Flood Risk Communication

Open Access•Xiaohui Liu, Bandana Kar et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

While Twitter has been touted as a preeminent source of up-to-date information on hazard events, the reliability of tweets is still a concern. Our previous publication extracted relevant tweets containing information about the 2013 Colorado flood event and its impacts. Using the relevant tweets, this research further examined the reliability (accuracy and trueness) of the tweets by examining the text and image content and comparing them to other …

  • Risk Communication and Community Resilience

David Cochran, Bandana Kar et al.•BOOK•Risk Communication and Community…•2019

Risk communication is crucial to building community resilience and reducing risk from extreme events. True community resilience involves accurate and timely dissemination of risk information to stakeholders. This book examines the policy and science of risk communication in the digital era. Themes include public awareness of risk and public participation in risk communication and resilience building. The first half of the book focuses on conceptu…

  • A Process Oriented Areal Interpolation Technique

    Bandana Kar, Michael E Hodgson•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) is the classic term for describing different totals observed from spatially different aggregation units. In a typical analytical problem (e.g. estimating total population within a watershed from census unit totals) the spatial distribution of populations within the census units are modeled. To minimize MAUP errors, areal interpolation techniques are used to model such sub-unit population distributions. Are…

  • Modeling the Potential Swath Coverage of Nadir and Off-Nadir Pointable Remote Sensing Satellite-Sensor Systems

    Michael E Hodgson, Bandana Kar•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2008

Pointable sensor systems onboard many earth resources satellites today, particularly the higher spatial resolution sensors, provide for a near infinite set of collection opportunities. Satellite orbits of these systems are not systematic repetitive tracks. Predicting future collection opportunities requires predicting where the satellite will be and then computing the potential swath coverage from a pointable sensor along these orbits. While each…
