  • The Impact of Land Conversion on Primate Habitats

    Open Access•Anailda T Farias, Stuart E Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 46

Conversion of primate forest habitat is a global concern with significant implications for primate populations. Although the geospatial Extent of Occurrence (EOO) data provided for primates by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature are widely used, they do not accurately reflect the existing extent of primate species because of ongoing habitat loss. We focused on four capuchin monkey species ( Sapajus apella , S. flavius , S, libi…

  • The Carbon Holdings of Northern Ecuador's Mangrove Forests

    Stuart E Hamilton, John P Lovette et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2017•References: 33

Within a GIS environment, we combine field measures of mangrove diameter,\nmangrove species distribution, and mangrove density with remotely sensed\nmeasures of mangrove location and mangrove canopy cover to estimate the\nmangrove carbon holdings of northern Ecuador. We find that the four northern\nestuaries of Ecuador contain approximately 7,742,999 t (plus or minus 15.47\npercent) of standing carbon. Of particular high carbon holdings are the\n…

  • Titling community land to prevent deforestation

    Open Access•Mark T Buntaine, Stuart E Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 17

Assigning land title to collective landholders is one of the primary policies land management agencies use to avoid deforestation worldwide. Such programs are designed to improve the ability of landholders to legally exclude competing users and thereby strengthen incentives to manage forests for long-term benefits. Despite the prevalence of this hypothesis, findings about the impacts of land titling programs on deforestation are mixed. Evidence i…
