  • State entrepreneurialism under economic transition: Bounded rationality in China’s high-speed rail new town governance

Open Access•Yu Tao, Tao Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2026

Drawing on 16 high-speed rail (HSR) new towns along the Beijing–Shanghai corridor, this paper develops a middle-range explanation of how state entrepreneurialism is practiced and differentiated under conditions of economic transition in China. While the notion of state entrepreneurialism has been widely used to interpret postreform urban development, its application to HSR new town governance often under specifies how cognitive limits, uneven inf…

  • Analyzing built environment impacts on travel distances across different transportation modes and employment status in Abu Dhabi

Open Access•Praveen Maghelal, Zijie Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Management•2026

This study examined how built environment variables based on the 4Ds model (Diversity, Design, Density and Distance to Transit) affect travel distances across three transportation modes (cars, buses, and active travel) in Abu Dhabi, for both employed and unemployed individuals. Using data from the Abu Dhabi household travel survey and geospatial datasets, the study employed Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression to analyze linear relationships a…

  • How does China’s low-carbon city pilot program promote green investment: A spatial–temporal analysis at the city and firm levels

Open Access•Zining Wang, Pengyu Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2026

The study examines how China Low-Carbon City Pilot (LCCP) program, as a comprehensive environmental regulation, promotes green investment using a dual-level framework that links firm-level behavioral response with city-level spatial dynamics. Using panel data for 276 cities and 28,907 listed firms from 2008 to 2021, we employ multi-period difference-in-differences and a spatial DiD approach. The findings corroborate that the LCCP significantly in…

  • Discovering the Temporal Evolution of Spatial Spillovers of Green Innovation: An Innovative Approach Using Dynamic Spatial-Temporal Weight Matrices

Open Access•Zining Wang, Pengyu Zhu•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2026

Understanding how spatial spillovers evolve over time—strengthening, weakening, or reversing—is a fundamental challenge in spatial econometrics, yet most empirical studies rely on static weight matrices that assume time-invariant spatial dependence. This article proposes a broadly applicable spatial-temporal weight matrix (STWM) framework in which temporal weights are derived from annual ratios of Moran’s I and Geary’s C, enabling the matrix to i…

  • Long-term impacts of historical education policy on wages in China: Insights on over-education

Open Access•Xiaodong Chen, Ding Li et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

This article contributes to the discourse on the phenomenon of over-education and its implications for labor misallocation within China. The celebrated Imperial Examination System, initiated in the Sui dynasty and enduring until 1905, cultivated an elite-driven society where educational attainments were paramount. Our study delves into historical Jinshi density data—indicative of the highest accolade in said examinations—coupled with insights fro…

Open Access•Pengyu Zhu, Yuxi Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our findings suggest that adolescent BD is characterized by functional abnormalities within DMN and FPN, as well as cerebellar gray matter atrophy. Disrupted structure-function coupling in these regions may reflect possible neurobiological mechanisms underlying BD during adolescence

  • Unravelling regional inequality: The heterogeneous impact of China’s Great Western Development Program

Pengyu Zhu, Yulin Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2025•References: 10

This paper studies China's Great Western Development Program, which was designed to promote growth in the backward western provinces. In addition to evaluating its original policy goal, we further investigate its unintended consequences and potential mechanisms. Employing a regression discontinuity design and night-light series data, we find that the Program led to a 1.3–1.7% faster annual output growth in China's western region. Though the finan…

Hui Wang, Wánɡ Huī et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•2016•Cited by: 16•References: 2

A driving force of urban development is “accumulation by dispossession” which occurs through expropriation, privatization, and commodification of land. While the macro theory is now well refined, there is still much we do not know about how the underlying processes occur and how they shape economic development and urbanization. In this study, we analyze 2009 survey data of land expropriation cases across 12 Chinese cities, and find that expropria…

  • Residential segregation and employment outcomes of rural migrant workers in China
