It is now over 10 years since Arnold Aronson and I, as co-founding editors, launched Theatre and Performance Design at the 13th Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (June 2015), in th

The Southall ever after festival – what Covid-19 taught us about community, research and funding
This article discusses the impact of COVID-19 on a UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) research project.Footnote1 The focus of the research, in its original iteration, was cultural heritage and identity within Indian diasporic communities across India and within the UK. In March 2020, four weeks into the project, work was suspended as the UK went into lockdown, with India following short…

Envisaging intergenerational spaces for co-creating creative writing
In this paper, we take an ecological view of children’s development to argue that preventive interventions should move beyond separating the microsystems of school and home to create new intergenerational spaces for nurturing mental wellbeing. Using the 5A’s theory of creativity, we draw upon our experiences of creative writing to explore how intergenerational spaces that facilitate co-creating creative writing between parents and carers and thei…

The urban public sector as commons
Susser and Tonnelat's article on the three urban commons is both visionary and heartening. Its counterpastoral polemic glorifies urban modes of sociality and the forms of common property fostered by urban life. The authors find in cities communities of experience that cross class lines and create inadvertent coalitions around shared problems. They argue that specific components of what has been called "the right to the city" need to be understood…
Theorizing Wisconsin's 2011 protests
Recent waves of social-movement protest in Wisconsin challenge conventional understandings of labor activism, as they have responded not only to rollbacks of labor rights but also to privatization of state programs and resources and budget cuts that target poor and working families. Drawing from participant-observation, I explore the question of whether the movements that arose in Wisconsin in early 2011 represented an expansion of union-based ac…
Wal-Mart, American consumer citizenship, and the 2008 recession
This article explores dominant ideological framings of the economic crisis that began in 2008, by examining shifting meanings of consumer citizenship in the US. The consumer citizen was a central figure in Keynesian ideology-one that encapsulated important assumptions about the proper relationship between production and consumption and the appropriate arenas for citizen engagement with the economy. Taking Wal-Mart as a case-study example, the art…

The Rise of a Global Garment Industry and the Reimagination of Worker Solidarity
In 1996, Bill Roseberry published an article in American Anthropologist entitled `The Rise of Yuppie Coffees and the Reimagination of Class in the United States'. In it, he explored the connections that linked the rise of specialty coffees marketed at Zabars and Starbucks to new class configurations of consumerism in the US and to new production arrangements in the coffee-producing countries. The article seeks to apply this approach to the analys…
Redefining the Boundaries of Work
This article focuses on new forms of community unionism that are being developed by apparel workers. Based on ethnographic research in Mexico and the United States, it argues that because so many apparel workers are women, because women have been excluded from unions in many contexts, because the relationship of apparel workers to their employers is “flexible” and unstable, and because the high turnover rates associated with low wages and poor wo…

The maintenance of peasant coffee production in a Peruvian valley
For 40 years, highland cultivators of Huancané, Puno, Peru, have seasonally migrated to valleys of the eastern Andes to grow coffee, while maintaining subsistence agriculture in their home communities. They work their coffee lands extensively, despite negative ecological impacts and the scarcity of new lands. This practice reflects the high labor demands of the subsistence sector and the often-demonstrated unwillingness of peasants to relinquish …
