Despite the conventional association with sophisticated metallurgical technologies, the Iron Age has long fallen between the two academic poles of prehistoric and classical archaeology. The more recent invention of a self-consciously ambivalent terminology of ‘proto-historic’ and ‘proto-urban’ features represents an attempt by mostly European archaeologists to give the Iron Age socioeconomic substance in its own right, while at the same time also…

Open Access•C E Greenwood, Catherine Greenwood et al.•ARTICLE•Britannia•2023

This study examined absorbed organic residues in pottery to assess differences in subsistence practices in Roman Britain. Through this approach, we investigated foodways at a major urban site and a range of small towns, villas and farmsteads within its hinterland. The study revealed that consumption at Cirencester differed remarkably to consumption at other sites in the surrounding hinterland, with a greater contribution from pigs and/or chickens…

  • A So-Called Ostrich-Eggshell Vessel at the J. Paul Getty Museum

    Tamar Hodos•ARTICLE•Getty Research Journal•2022

The collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa contains an Aegean Bronze Age ceramic jar with stippled decoration that is described as an imitation of the dimpled shell of an ostrich egg. This essay takes a closer look at the historical development of the long scholarly association of ceramic vessel shapes and motifs with the imitation of ostrich-eggshell vessels in the Aegean Bronze Age, deconstructing any meaningful relationship …

Food is often one of the most distinctive expressions of social, religious, cultural or ethnic groups. However, the archaeological identification of specific religious dietary practices, including the Jewish tradition of keepingkosher, associated with ritual food practices and taboos, is very rare. This is arguably one of the oldest known diets across the world and, for an observant Jew, maintaining dietary laws (known as Kashruth) is a fundament…

  • The Archaeology of the Mediterranean Iron Age

    Open Access•Tamar Hodos•BOOK•Archaeology of the Mediterranean…•2020

The Mediterranean's Iron Age period was one of its most dynamic eras. Stimulated by the movement of individuals and groups on an unprecedented scale, the first half of the first millennium BCE witnesses the development of Mediterranean-wide practices, including related writing systems, common features of urbanism, and shared artistic styles and techniques, alongside the evolution of wide-scale trade. Together, these created an engaged, interlinke…

  • Eggstraordinary artefacts

    Open Access•Tamar Hodos•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2020

Decorated ostrich eggs were luxury items in antiquity. They were engraved, painted, and embellished with ivory, precious metals and faience fittings. They have been found primarily in elite funerary contexts from Mesopotamia and the Levant to the wider Mediterranean throughout the region’s Bronze and Iron Ages (third-first millennia BCE). Most scholarship has assessed their iconography to determine craftsman origin, equating decorative style with…

  • The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and Globalization

Tamar Hodos, Robbie Robertson et al.•BOOK•Routledge Handbook of Archaeology…•2016•Cited by: 53

Because so much of how we read the past is conditioned by ideas and descriptions that grew out of that past, globalization thinking potentially provides us with fresh opportunities to re-examine history through new lenses and discover detail and trends previously obscured. However, globalization has itself succumbed to similar tendencies. Indeed, part of the diculty in understanding globalization lies in the way the term has been captured by vest…

  • Globalisation and the Roman World

Open Access•Tamar Hodos, Richard Hingley et al.•BOOK•Globalisation and the Roman World•2014

This book explores a new perspective for understanding the Roman world, using connectivity as a major point of departure. Globalisation is apparent in increased flows of objects, people and ideas and in the creation of translocal consciousness in everyday life. Based on these criteria, there is a case for globalisation in the ancient Roman world. Essential for anyone interested in Romanisation, this volume provides the first sustained critical ex…

  • Globalization and Colonization

    Tamar Hodos•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2010•Cited by: 12

The seeming discrepancy between postmodern diversity and contemporary concepts of globalization reflects a misunderstanding of the nature of globalization, which should not be taken to imply that there is a uni- fied world society or culture. The process of globalization actually serves to highlight and reinforce cultural heterogeneities. It is the balance between shared sets of practices and local heterogeneities that enables the globalization m…

  • Colonial Engagements in the Global Mediterranean Iron Age

    Open Access•Tamar Hodos•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2009•Cited by: 25•References: 13

The application of globalization theory to colonial contexts in recent years has emphasized articulations of the colonized and the colonizers. For the Mediterranean Iron Age, focus has been upon expressions of local (colonized) identities, and of regional variabilities of the overseas Greeks and Phoenicians; any attention to the engagements that the Greeks and Phoenicians had with one another during this time has been solely contrapositive in the…

  • Intermarriage in the Western Greek Colonies

    Open Access•Tamar Hodos•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•1999•Cited by: 3

Intermarriage in the Greek colonies in Italy and Sicily has long fascinated scholars, many of whom view the presence of Italian fibulae in otherwise materially Greek graves as the result of intermarriage between Greek colonial men and local, native women. A reconsideration of the evidence suggests that the hypothesis cannot be generalized for all the early colonies, particularly the Sicilian ones, where the nature of the evidence differs signific…
