  • Multi-Taxa Neo-Taphonomic Analysis of Bone Remains from Barn Owl Pellets and Cross-Validation of Observations: A Case Study from Dominica (Lesser Antilles)

Open Access•E Stoetzel, Corentin Bochaton et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Paleo- and neo-taphonomic analyses of bone assemblages rarely consider all the occurring taxa in a single study and works concerning birds of prey as accumulators of microvertebrate bone remains mostly focus on small mammals such as rodents and soricomorphs. However, raptors often hunt and consume a large range of taxa, including vertebrates such as small mammals, fishes, amphibians, squamates and birds. Bone remains of all these taxonomic groups…

  • Investigating Past and Present Carpometacarpus Morphology in Mimidae: A Multi-Methods Approach to Evidence from the Guadeloupe Islands

Open Access•Nicolas Jeantet, Ronan Ledevin et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2021•Cited by: 1

Past bird communities are still under-studied in several Caribbean regions, including the Lesser Antilles. In order to improve our understanding of this area’s avifauna, we explore morphometrical variations of the carpometacarpus (CMC) within West Indies Mimidae species. We combine geometric morphometric (GMM) and conventional osteology focusing on characters of the entire or distal portion of the CMC. Morphological variation related to their phy…

  • The Role of Birds in the Settlement of Shahr-i Sokhta (Sistan, Iran) During the 3rd Millennium BC

    Open Access•Monica Gala, Antonio Tagliacozzo•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Archaeological excavations at the site of Shahr-i Sokhta yielded many bird remains. The excellent state of preservation allowed for the identification of 2875 specimens attributed to 43 different species. The avifaunal assemblage is mainly characterized by aquatic species, such as the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), representing 60% of the identified remains, and the Anseriformes. The presence of cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), see-see partri…

  • Ecology and subsistence strategies in the eastern Italian Alps during the Middle Palaeolithic

Open Access•Ivana Fiore, Monica Gala et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•Cited by: 102

Italy is very rich in Middle Palaeolithic sites, and the Veneto region ranges among those with the best archaeozoological information. Most of the Middle Palaeolithic sites are located in caves and rock shelters situated at the mouths of the Alpine valleys, in the piedmont slopes. The two sites that offer the best archaeozoological data are Grotta di Fumane and Grotta S. Bernardino. Grotta S. Bernardino was occupied alternately by humans and carn…
