Tracing glazed ware production in Islamic Sicily: Macroscopic, petrographic, and geochemical evidence
This study presents the first large-scale integrated archaeometric investigation of the fabrics of Islamic-period glazed wares produced and consumed in Sicily between the late 9th and 12th centuries. Through the integration of macroscopic analysis, thin-section petrography, and geochemistry, this study refines the characterisation of Sicilian glazed ware fabrics and strengthens their distinction from ceramics produced in Ifriqiya. A total of 188 …
Ceramic production, recipes and technological choices in early medieval Walīla (Volubilis, Morocco)
In North Africa, archaeometric studies on early medieval ceramics remain limited. Past scholarship has focused largely on glazed wares, with little attention paid to the unglazed wheelmade and handmade wares which dominate archaeological assemblages; as a result, we still understand very poorly the technology and raw materials used to manufacture ceramics in the early Islamic world. This article presents the first comprehensive archaeometric anal…
Bone Anvils and New Types of Osseous Tools at Walīla (Volubilis, Morocco): Use of Animal Byproducts in the Industries of a Medieval Town
Bone anvils used to sharpen metal sickle blades are frequently documented in the archaeological record of the Roman and medieval Mediterranean and beyond, with new finds reported each year. This article reports anvils from the early medieval town of Walīla (Roman Volubilis) in northern Morocco and presents two other types of bone tools (bone grinding implements and tool handles) not previously described in the scholarly literature. We argue these…
Gaming in the Maghreb al-Aqsa: New evidence from Idrisid Walīla (Volubilis)
Boardgames appear frequently in early medieval Arabic literature, reflecting their embeddedness in everyday life and social discourse. Despite abundant textual and material evidence, the archaeology of games in Islamic contexts remains understudied, partly due to the scarcity of reliably-dated gameboards. This article addresses this gap by presenting a previously unpublished game board from the medieval hammam of Walīla (Roman Volubilis), Morocco…
Late antique African Painted Wares (APW): Tracing local production in North Africa
The production and circulation of common wares during the late antique period in North Africa has been largely overlooked by past scholarship, despite their potential to shed light on late antique production, workshop organisation and regional ceramic economies. This paper provides the first detailed study of a distinctive type of late antique, wheelmade common ware, the so-called African ‘painted ware’ (APW). It first presents a critical overvie…
Kairouan and the medieval ceramic industry in Tunisia: New data from compositional analysis of glazed and unglazed wares from the sites of Bulla Regia and Chimtou
The impact of a decade of digital transformation on employment, wages, and inequality in the EU: A "Conveyor Belt" Hypothesis
We study the effects of digital transformation in the European Union on individual employment outcomes, wage growth, and income inequality, during the decade 2010-9. Our results allow us to formulate a 'conveyor-belt' hypothesis suggesting that employment confers a competitive advantage in navigating the digital transition due to the accumulation of pertinent skills in the workplace. Because digital skills are acquired with the changing demands o…
The technology of polychrome glazed ceramics in Ifriqiya: New data from the site of Chimtou
Ifriqiya (roughly Tunisia and eastern Algeria) is believed to have played a significant role in the diffusion of ceramic glazed technologies into other regions of the Western Mediterranean. However, due to limited analysis on North African glazed ceramics, its role in technology transfer remains poorly understood. This paper uses SEM–EDS and petrographic analyses to understand the technology employed in the production of Tunisian ceramics through…
Coupling morphometric analysis and soil erosion modeling for the characterization of the geomorphological setting in the surrounding of the archaeological site of Chimtou (Central Medjerda Valley, Tun…
This study focuses on the characterization of the geomorphological setting in the hinterland of the archaeological sites of Chimtou and Bordj Hellal located in the central Medjerda Valley, North Tunisia. Our approach integrates the algorithm Geomorphons for semi-automatic landform classification with the soil erosion model Unit Stream Power-based Erosion Deposition (USPED), providing information on the intensity and regional distribution of erosi…
Conquest to Conversion: The Archaeology of Religious Transformation in Early Medieval North Africa
North Africa (west of Egypt) is a compelling locale to explore how and when a Muslim minority became the Muslim majority. Previous scholarly approaches to medieval religious change rely almost exclusively on much later written sources, and as a result, little is understood about the religious landscape in which believers operated in. This article examines critically the material evidence for mosque construction and church abandonment and proposes…
Isotopic evidence for human mobility in late antique Bulla Regia (Tunisia)
This paper represents the first isotopic study on late antique human mobility in North Africa, using the urban site of Bulla Regia in Tunisia as a case study. We also present the first values for bioavailable 87 Sr/ 86 Sr in northern Tunisia, analysing 63 plant and snail samples, as well as a simple method for the pre-processing of plants in the field to facilitate their export. Bulla Regia was a prominent Roman and late antique town situated on …
Bulla Regia II: Excavations in the Christian cemetery
This paper reports the preliminary results from three seasons of excavations in the Christian cemetery by the Tunisian-British Bulla Regia Archaeological Project. In 2017–2019, excavations in, and around, the Late Antique church in the western cemetery uncovered a complex funerary landscape with a variety of different tomb types, including mosaic caisson tombs, simple masonry tombs, amphora tombs, and earthen graves and multiple funerary mensae .…
Re-thinking the 'Green Revolution' in the Mediterranean world
From the seventh century AD, successive Islamic polities were established around the Mediterranean. Historians have linked these caliphates with the so-called 'Islamic Green Revolution'-the introduction of new crops and agricultural practices that transformed the economies of regions under Muslim rule. Increasingly, archaeological studies have problematised this largely text-based model of agrarian innovation, yet much of this research remains re…
Urban life in early Islamic Morocco: New light from the excavations at Walīla (Roman Volubilis)
This article presents a research update from the INSAP-UCL excavations at the UNESCO site of medieval Walīla (Roman Volubilis), Morocco. Though the site is best known as the Roman city of Volubilis, in the Middle Ages, and by then called Walīla, it took on a new importance as a Berber centre, the probable locale of an Umayyad or Abbasid garrison and the capital of Idrīs I, the founder of one of the earliest Islamic states in Morocco. It is the on…
Medieval Boom in the North-west Sahara: Evolving Oasis Landscapes in the Wadi Draa, Morocco (c.700–1500 AD)
Modern scholarship on the medieval Sahara has focused on a handful of famous entrepôt sites that have their origins in the 8th century or later, and as a result we still understand very poorly the nature and extent of Saharan oasis settlement and agriculture in the golden age of Saharan trade. This article presents the first securely dated chronology for oasis development in the north-west Sahara based on three seasons of archaeological survey an…
Urban transformation in the Central Medjerda Valley (north-west Tunisia) in late antiquity and the middle ages: A regional approach
Recent scholarship on North African cities has done much to dispel earlier assumptions about late antique collapse and demonstrate significant continuity into the Byzantine and medieval periods. Yet urban changes did not affect North Africa evenly. Far less is known about the differing regional trajectories that shaped urban transformation and the extent to which pre-Roman and Roman micro-regions continued to share meaningful characteristics in s…
Authority beyond Tribe and State in the “Middle Maghrib”

Horses and Habitations: Iron Age Rock Art from Fortified Hilltop Settlements in the Wadi Draa, Morocco
The article presents important results from the Middle Draa Project ( MDP ) in southern Morocco related to two mid-1st millennium CE hilltop settlements (hillforts) that were associated with significant rock art assemblages. The combination of detailed survey and radiocarbon dating of these remarkable sites provides a unique window on the Saharan world in which the pecked engravings, predominantly of horses, were produced. As the horse imagery fe…
Early Islamic North Africa: A New Perspective
This volume proposes a new approach to the Arab conquests and the spread of Islam in North Africa. In recent years, those studying the Islamic world have shown that the coming of Islam was not marked by devastation or decline, but rather by considerable cultural and economic continuity. In North Africa, with continuity came significant change. Corisande Fenwick argues that the establishment of Muslim rule also coincided with a phase of intense ur…
An integrated methodology for the documentation and protection of cultural heritage in the Mena region: A case study from Libya and Tunisia

It highlights the integrated and comprehensive nature of the training based on an innovative approach designed to incre…
Bulla Regia I: A new church and Christian cemetery
This paper reports the preliminary results from two short seasons of fieldwork that the Tunisian–British Bulla Regia Archaeological Report was able to undertake in September 2016 and 2017. In 2016, the work focused on a geophysical survey of the western cemetery and revealed a complex landscape of funerary enclosures and mausolea outside the protected boundaries of the site, likely to be of Roman date. In 2017, photogrammetric techniques were use…
Long-term History in a Moroccan Oasis Zone: The Middle Draa Project 2015
This article describes the research questions and presents the initial ams dates of the Middle Draa Project (southern Morocco), a collaborative field survey project between the University of Leicester and the Institut National des Sciences de l’Archéologie et du Patrimoine ( insap ) of Morocco. Starting from a very low baseline of past archaeological research in this pre-desert valley, the overall objective of the project is to establish the exte…
Azdud (Ashdod-Yam): An Early Islamic Fortress on the Mediterranean Coast
This book purports to present the results of excavations by the Israel Antiquity Authority in 1997-9 at the medieval site Mhz Azdd, now known as Ashdod-Yam or Minat al-Qal'a, in Israel.Once thought to date to the 10th -11th centuries, these excavations revealed that this small coastal fort (35 x 55m) was in fact built in the late 7th century over the razed insulae of the Byzantine town Azotus Paralious as part of a broader system of early Umayyad…
Tingis
Tingis (mod. Tangier) was a city on the northern coast of Morocco. Probably a Carthaginian foundation, it came under Roman control in 81 BCE and later became provincial capital of Mauretania Tingitana.
DMP Ix: Summary Report on the Fourth Season of Excavations of the Burials and Identity team
The fourth season of the Burials and Identity component of the Desert Migrations Project in 2010 focused on completion of excavation work at two main cemeteries (TAG001 and TAG012) and smaller-scale sampling work at a number of nearby cemeteries. The investigation of a number of burials in a semi-nucleated escarpment cemetery TAG063 produced interesting new information on Proto-Urban Garamantian funerary rites, dating to the latter centuries BC. …
DMP Xii: Excavations and Survey of the so-called Garamantian Royal Cemetery (GSC030–031)
Survey and excavation by the Burials and Identity team of the Desert Migrations Project (DMP) focused in 2011 on the so-called Royal Cemetery of the Garamantes close to the Jarma escarpment, a few km south of Old Jarma. This Late Garamantian cemetery contains two distinct zones (GSC030 and GSC031) of monumental rectangular stepped tombs, which were plaster-coated and fronted by massive offering tables and stelae. Previous dating evidence has sugg…

The problem of reservations to multilateral treaties signed at the close of international conferences is one that has long been a matter of concern to the regional Organization of the American States, as it is now to the Secretariat of the United Nations. How can we promote the general acceptance of international agreements and yet recognize that, after the text of the treaty has been agreed upon and signed by representatives of the executive dep…

The Dominican Republic: Intervention or Collective Self-Defense
In the good old days when it was the privilege of a country to govern itself as badly as it chose, and when constitutional restraints seemed an unreasonable burden upon elements of the people seeking more immediate reform, it was accepted that civil war was a purely domestic problem with which third states had no right to interfere. 1 Not only had third states no right to interfere, but they had a duty to see to it that their territory did not be…

The most significant feature of the development of international arbitration during the past generation has been the gradual widening of the field of controversies to which the obligation to arbitrate should apply.
