Egyptian Blue Production and Lead Metallurgy in a Late Hellenistic Workshop on Kos (Greece)
A well-preserved late Hellenistic workshop in the agora of Kos provides a rare opportunity to examine pigment production embedded in a multicrafting setting. Excavations of a room in the eastern stoa have revealed fire-structures, Egyptian blue pellets, a range of mineral earth pigments, litharge rods, lead slag, tools and other production debris, demonstrating both pigment manufacture and lead metallurgy within a single workshop space. This arch…
Ochres as earth pigments in Hellenistic and Roman polychromy
The Colourant Mapping Project
Over the last decades, polychromy research has provided insight into the rich variety of materials that composed the ancient Mediterranean palette, including minerals, rocks, earths, metal oxides, lakes and pyrotechnological products. Even though polychromy is considered an important aspect of ancient Greek and Roman art, the organisation of colourant production and trade remains rather underexplored. This is possibly due to the inherent complexi…
The materialisation of colour
Contrasting Western views of colour as a de-materialised, abstract value, this paper approaches the technologies of colourant production in Mediterranean antiquity as the active processes of colour materialization by examining the late Hellenistic workshop found on the Aegean Island of Kos as a case study. The challenging pyrotechnological process of Egyptian blue production is the focus of this paper, which aims to illustrate the sequence of mat…
Colourful earth
The red, brown, yellow and green pigment lumps from the Hellenistic pigment production site of the ancient agora of Kos (Dodecanese, Greece) are the focus of this paper. A selection of pigments is examined through a combination of analytical techniques, including SEM-EDS on uncoated samples, X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR and pRaman spectroscopy. Through the study of raw pigments deriving from the context of a production site, the aim is to appro…
