Testing Non-Conventional Archaeomagnetic Materials
Teotihuacan, the largest urban center of ancient Mesoamerica, remains one of the most intensively studied archaeological sites in Mexico, yet its internal chronology continues to be debated. Among its most distinctive cultural features are omnipresent mural paintings, executed on lime plaster (stucco) surfaces that served as their structural support. In this study, we analyze for the first time mural pigments and stuccos together as a single arch…
Heavy Metal Pollution and Health Risk Assessments of Urban Dust in Downtown Murcia, Spain
Around eight million people—mainly in cities—die prematurely from pollution-related diseases; thus, studies of urban dust have become increasingly relevant over the last two decades. In this study, an assessment of heavy metal and metalloid contamination in urban dust was conducted in downtown Murcia, Spain. The objectives were to evaluate the level of contamination and the associated health risks, both with a spatially explicit focus. One hundre…
Tracing the ritual fire in La Quemada (Northern Mesoamerica)
On the early development of Huastecs (Gulf of Mexico) revealed by the Earth's magnetic field recorded in domestic hearths
A detailed magnetic mineralogy and archaeomagnetic study was carried out on recently discovered domestic hearths and burned floors at the Chak Pet archaeological settlement (Tamaulipas, Mexico). The study aimed to obtain reliable absolute chronological constraints on the early development of Huastecs during the Formative period. Oriented hand samples corresponded to four domestic hearths and one burned floor. Continuous thermomagnetic curves reve…
Magnetic Susceptibility Prospecting and Geochemical Characterization of Taxco’s Mining Waste Dam Guerrero I (Mexico)
Mining activity at Taxco produces seven mining waste deposits, which are problematic for the health of the community and for the environment in general. This study targets the Guerrero I mining waste dam (the youngest of the region), located south of Taxco de Alarcon, in the northern portion of Guerrero State, Mexico. This study reports the vertical magnetic susceptibility prospecting results and geochemical characterization of 27 tailing samples…
Monte Alban periphery (Oaxaca, middle Mesoamerica)
Mayan Fire
Human migrations and volcanic activity
The archaeological site of Tingambato is one of the few evidences of the populations that settled in western Mexico during the Classic and Postclassic periods, before the development of the great Tarascan empire. Therefore, its study is fundamental to know both the characteristics of the culture that preceded the empire, as well as the phenomena that led to its formation. During the last decade, efforts have increased to reveal the history of thi…
Refining the absolute chronology of Teotihuacan (Mesoamerica)
From Toltecs to Franciscans
The memory of fire in El Coporo (Northern Mesoamerica)
Ball court in la quemada, northern Mesoamerica
Pyrotechnological knowledge in the pre-Hispanic Maya society
New constraints on the medieval repopulation process in the northern Iberian plateau from the full vector archaeomagnetic dating of two hearths at La Pudia site (Caleruega, Burgos, Spain)
First archaeointensity reference paleosecular variation curve for South America and its implications for geomagnetism and archaeology
We report comprehensive rock-magnetic and archaeointensity investigations from 21 well-constrained pottery fragments from the Catamarca province of northwest Argentina. The absolute ages of the studied sites are ascertained by several high-quality radiometric ages and range between 1940 to 1140 14 C yr BP. Magnetic mineralogy experiments indicates that the remanence is carried by thermally stable Ti-poor titanomagnetites. Forty-seven samples belo…
La Quemada
First archaeomagnetic results from Colombia (the Bogotá Savanna Pre-Hispanic sites)
Comprehensive magnetic surveys of kilns for bell and tile fabrication in Castile (Spain)
Archaeomagnetic evidence of pre-Hispanic origin of Mezcal
Absolute geomagnetic intensity record from pre-Columbian pottery dates elite Tlailotlacan Woman in ancient Teotihuacan
Mineral magnetic properties of an alluvial paleosol sequence in the Maya Lowlands
The use of pictorial remanent magnetization as a dating tool
A detailed rock-magnetic and archaeomagnetic investigation on wattle and daub building (Bajareque) remains from Teuchitlán tradition (nw Mesoamerica)
Dating of ancient kilns
Absolute geomagnetic intensity determinations on Formative potsherds (1400–700 BC) from the Oaxaca Valley, Southwestern Mexico
New Thellier-Coe archeointensity determinations have been measured on 15 potsherds from the Oaxaca Valley belonging to three of the four Formative Periods (Pre-Classical) of Mesoamerica, spanning 1400–700 BC. Seven of these are considered to be reliable and indicate a geomagnetic field strength of about 30 μT. This value is some 75% of the present geomagnetic field strength but is in agreement with the absolute intensities predicted from global m…

Rock‐Magnetic and Archaeointensity Investigation of Pottery and a Burned Floor at the Tzintzuntzan Archaeological Site, Western Mexico
We report a detailed rock‐magnetic and archaeointensity analysis of four pottery fragments and a burned floor recovered from the Tzintzuntzan archaeological site in western Mexico. Results from rock‐magnetic experiments (x‐T curves and first‐order reversal curves [FORC] diagrams) indicate the suitability of most of these materials as faithful geomagnetic field recorders. Potsherds were archaeomagnetically dated by comparing their mean intensity v…
