Physical Impairment and Care Estimation in Medieval Estremoz (Portugal)
This study aims to compare diet and skeletal health indicators between individuals with varying degrees of physical impairment and the general adult population from medieval Estremoz, Portugal, to assess their health status and their survival outcomes. Skeletal remains from 41 male adult individuals, including 8 with physical impairments and 33 from the general population, were analyzed. The impairment of these individuals was described, and thei…
Health and well-being in Medieval Estremoz, Portugal
Insights into agricultural practices at the Phoenician site of Castro Marim between 7th-5th century BCE
Castro Marim is an Iron Age site from the Algarve region, Portugal. The earliest evidence of settlement, from the Late Bronze Age, dates to the 9 th century BCE, with the Phoenician-Punic period dating from the 7 th to the 3 rd century BCE. This study focuses on the stable isotope analysis of plant and collagen of faunal remains to reconstruct cultivation and husbandry practices. Barley was the most abundantly cultivated cereal crop. The stable i…

EA-IRMS has been used to find isotope ratio patterns as a way of ascertaining the provenance of materials in several fields of science. In this work, EA-IRMS analysis of δ13C and δ15N was used to study historical rugs’ raw materials. The influence of chromophores in the isotope ratio of wool was studied by dyeing contemporary wool with traditional dyestuff and analyzing it by EA-IRMS. Additionally, aiming towards provenance determination, histori…
The “Ferradeira” individual burial of Herdade do Álamo (Beja)
The individual burial of the Herdade do Álamo, located in Beja municipality, South Portugal, is presented along with its bioanthropological study, radiocarbon dating and isotopic approaches on diet and mobility. The results show a male, with a terrestrial diet and youth mobility, dating from the last quarter of the 3rd millennium BC. The archaeometallurgical study of the metal votive assemblage (one tongue dagger and three Palmela points) indicat…
Bone stable isotope data of the Late Roman population (4th–7th centuries CE) from Mondragones (Granada)
Addressing human mobility in Iberian Neolithic and Chalcolithic ditched enclosures
Diet and mobility during the Christian conquest of Iberia
Effect of different healing stages on stable isotope ratios in skeletal lesions
Introduction Physiological stress is one of the various factors that can have an impact on stable isotope ratios. However, its effect on bone collagen stable isotope ratios is still not fully understood. This study aims to build on previous research on how different disease stages may affect bone collagen stable isotope ratios. Materials and Methods Carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotope ratios were assessed in 33 skeletons that retained e…

Diet and mobility of fauna from Late Neolithic–Chalcolithic site of Perdigões, Portugal
Geochemical identity of pre-Dogon and Dogon populations at Bandiagara (Mali, 11th–20th cent. AD)
Stable isotope and multi-analytical investigation of Monte da Cegonha
Dietary reconstruction in Migration Period Central Germany
Bioavailable 87Sr/86Sr in different environmental samples — Effects of anthropogenic contamination and implications for isoscapes in past migration studies
Mobility in Thuringia or mobile Thuringians
Influence de l’environnement sur la gestion des ressources au Néolithique dans la zone refuge du Dhar Néma (Mauritanie sud-orientale)
Presented here are some aspects of an archaeological investigation conducted in eastern Mauritania in the region of Dhar Nema, a south-eastern extension of the Oualata and Tichitt cliffs (Dhar). This evidence is presented with a focus on its environmental context. The escarpment of the Dhar, a specific geomorphological environment, provided a refuge geoecosystem that continued to supply water during the second part of the Holocene. During the per…
