Small-prey exploitation has been considered an important component of socio-economic development of past human groups. Consequently, several studies have set the focus on taphonomical analysis of small animals such as birds or leporids. Nevertheless, human groups are not the only agents that can produce bone accumulations, as archaeological assemblages can also be the result of non-human predators and natural phenomena. For this reason, it is ess…

The stratigraphy and materials from a survey carried out in 1994 and 1995 in a rock-shelter in Tamajón (southwestern Iberian Central Range) are studied here. The Pleistocene deposits were generated by high-energy channelled fluvial flows and dense currents of debris flow and mud flow type. The recovered lithic industry, created mainly in low-quality local materials, can be associated with Gravettian technocomplexes. Three radiocarbon dates obtain…

Carnivore damage on Neanderthal fossils is a much more common taphonomic modification than previously thought. Its presence could have different explanations, including predatory attacks or scavenging scenarios, which are both situations with important implications concerning Neanderthal behaviour. In the present paper, we analyse several Neanderthal hominin fossils from a taphonomic and forensic perspective in order to infer the nature of the mo…
