The Iron Age in continental Europe is a period of profound cultural and biological importance with heterogeneous trends through space and time. Regional overviews are therefore useful for better understanding the main cultural and biological patterns characterizing this period across the European regions. For the area of modern Switzerland, a rich archeological and anthropological record represents the Late Iron Age. However, no review of the mai…

  • From “business‐like” to businesses

    Open Access•Christine Cooper, Jonathan Tweedie et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 12

This paper sets out an archival account of events leading up to the mass agencification of the British civil service by the Thatcher administration (1979–1990). This account holds lessons for contemporary understandings of the ideological roots and institutional structures of corporatization. When Thatcher came to power in 1979, she wanted to make government “efficient” through the adoption of “business‐like” practices. We show that this project …

    Open Access•J Somers, Julian M Somers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 2

To date, anthropological comparative studies from Switzerland are rare. An osteoarchaeological analysis was carried out on the rural population of Zweisimmen, consisting of 134 skeletons. For each individual, the arm position…

  • It was absolute hell

    Open Access•Phil Taylor, Christine Cooper•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 19

As part of a broader current of critique of the economic and political dynamics of prison privatisation - a critique that initially emanated from the USA - this paper focuses on Scotland and on research carried out at its then only private penal institution, HMP Kilmarnock. The authors dismantle the government's case for extending prison privatisation by drilling deep into the experience of Kilmarnock and demonstrating the deleterious effects of …

  • Independently verified reductionism

    Open Access•Christine Cooper, Phil Taylor•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2005•Cited by: 14•References: 22

The Scottish Parliament recently considered proposals, which, if implemented, would lead to a considerable expansion of prison privatization. Both the Scottish Prison Service and the Scottish Executive used what they claimed to be an independently verified cost saving of £700 million as the major justification for these proposals. The way this figure was constructed and used provides an example of the increasing tendency on the part of government…

  • Effectiveness of Problem-Solving Groups

    Open Access•John P Wanous, Arnon E Reichers et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

Multiple measures of both group process and effectiveness of outcome were gathered from 100 problem-solving groups of 526 people. Generally low correlations among the measures of effectiveness of process and those of outcome effectiveness indicate that effectiveness is multidimensional as previously suggested. The relationships between measures of process and effectiveness of outcome supported previous models suggesting general linkages between t…
