  • Locality and Agency in the Iron Age Mediterranean

Open Access•Giulia Saltini Semerari, Beatriz Marín-Aguilera et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Locality and Agency in the Iron…•2026

Against the background of the interest in ancient Mediterranean connectivity and globalization, the present volume examines local places and local communities. Exploring the interplay between the local and the global, the focus shifts from long-distance connections and 'global' trends to the local dimensions of Mediterranean interactions, highlighting how local contexts engaged with their long-distance counterparts. Given the transformative natur…

  • Mirroring Mediterraneanization

Open Access•Kai Riehle, Erich Kistler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 12

With a total of 162 samples, one of the most extensive NAA sample series from one single inland settlement in Archaic Sicily is now available to address long debated issues about the impact of the so called ‘Greek Colonization’ on local pottery production. In a previous series, a wide range of wares manufactured on site could be determined, ranging from traditional style incised and stamped vessels via matt painted ceramics of regional style to G…

  • Neutron activation analysis in Mediterranean Archaeology

    Open Access•Kai Riehle, Erich Kistler et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 30

This paper, jointly written by participants of a workshop held in 2021, argues for an increased recognition and application of neutron activation analysis (NAA) in the archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean. Discussing the methodological strengths and challenges, it highlights the great potential NAA has for collecting proxy data from ceramics in order to develop progressive concepts of archaeological research within and beyond the Mediterranea…

  • The indigenous settlement of Monte Iato (western Sicily)

Open Access•G Montana, Anna Maria Polito et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•References: 14

An ethnoarchaeometric approach has been followed to identify the textural and compositional characteristics of the ceramic pastes produced in ancient Iaitas/Ietas, an indigenous site located in western Sicily on Monte Iato, a few tens of kilometres from Palermo. This approach was primarily motivated by the lack of discovered Archaic kilns or production sites/workshops and the inability to identify reference groups. Raw clays were sampled in the t…

  • Die Entstehung Griechenlands

Christoph Ulf, Erich Kistler•BOOK•Die Entstehung Griechenlands•2019

Based on the concepts of intentional history, ethnicity and ethnogenesis, and drawing on an examination of archeological and written sources, this textbook outlines the emergence of a “feeling of belonging” to Hellenic culture, from the Homeric epic to the solidification of Greek identity in the early empire period, as Greeks looked back on their past.

  • Monte Iato, Sicily

    Open Access•Erich Kistler•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2018

Monte Iato lies in the heart of the mountainous hinterland of western Sicily. Owing to the advantages of this central position also in terms of transport, Monte Iato was settled during the early seventh century bce at the latest; by the early fifth century bce , the settlement had become one of the most important indigenous centers of the west‐Sicilian interior. After a period of decline, it flourished once again in the early third century, the i…

  • Feasts. Wine and Society. eighth-sixth centuries BCE

    Erich Kistler•CHAPTER•Etruscology•2017

Feasts in antiquity were public events and thus instrumental in shaping the political scene. They were organized via certain culinary and table-specific registers of consumption that were determined in each case by locally dominant social structures and power relations. This led to certain local and period-specific "consumption-scapes" with a sustained impact on the feasting culture of each local group, leaving their traces in the resulting archa…
