  • Paleoeconomy and mortuary practices in the Mediterranean Copper Age: Zooarchaeology of the Bell Beaker assemblage from Padru Jossu, Sardinia (Italy)

    Open Access•Luca Lai, Ornella Fonzo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 67

The Bell Beaker phenomenon, as evidenced by its distinctive material culture, is regarded as a pivotal period of intensified connectivity in Western Europe and the Western Mediterranean, spanning several centuries from the mid-3rd millennium BC to different periods in different regions. The nature and mechanisms behind the diffusion of its markers have been under interpretive scrutiny for many decades, until the recent contribution of stable isot…

  • Understanding the intersection of Rapid climate change and subsistence Practices: An isotopic perspective from a Mediterranean Bell Beaker case study

Open Access•Luca Lai, Ornella Fonzo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2025•References: 115

  • Social Organization, Intersections, and Interactions in Bronze Age Sardinia. Reading Settlement Patterns in the Area of Sarrala with the Contribution of Applied Sciences

    Open Access•Luca Lai, Stefano Crispu•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2024•References: 14

Bronze Age sites in the coastal area of Sarrala, in Eastern Sardinia, have been subjected to survey and excavation over the last half-century. The study area, whose social and economic evolution and changing scales of interactions are traced through settlement patterns and building analysis, is interpreted in light of more general trends suggested by stable isotopes, archaeogenetics, and paleoclimatology. The local picture of progressive demograp…

  • Intensified exploitation of animal products in the Mediterranean Copper Age: Isotopic evidence from Scaba 'e Arriu (Sardinia)

    Open Access•Luca Lai, Ornella Fonzo et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 100

In this paper, dietary patterns are reconstructed across two phases represented at the Copper Age of Scaba 'e Arriu (Sardinia, Italy) via isotopic analysis of human and animal skeletal remains. Collagen carbon, nitrogen, and bioapatite carbon, and oxygen isotopes were used to infer diet, economic practices, and possibly different climatic conditions. Differential management of cattle, sheep/goats, and pigs was detected, with scarce animal product…

  • An isotopic investigation on diet and inequality: The human remains from Gannì (Sardinia, 3rd millennium BC)

    Open Access•Luca Lai, E Pittoni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 21

  • Sardinian Lives Matter: Dynamics and Reactions in an Italian Internal Colony

    Open Access•Luca Lai, Sharon Watson•ARTICLE•Anthropological Journal of…•2021

Sardinia had five centuries of independence up until the fifteenth century, and thereafter partial institutional autonomy until 1847. With its inclusion in the Italian state, Sardinia’s cultural, economic, institutional and political systems make it uniquely colonial in comparison to other ethnic/national minorities across Europe (Basque, Welsh, Catalan, etc.), leaving limited real choices for development to the locals and constraining what is se…
