On the fringes of Atlantic Rock Art
This paper presents multi-disciplinary research undertaken between 2022 and 2024 at El Riscal, the only rock art station known in Seville (Andalusia, Spain), a territory otherwise very rich in Late Prehistoric archaeological remains. Discovered in the 1980s and first published in the early 1990s, El Riscal presents engraved motifs not documented in other parts of southern Spain, where schematic-style painted rock art is prevalent. The set of meth…
Seafaring megaliths
The Cañaveral de León stela (Huelva, Spain). A monumental sculpture in a landscape of settlements and pathways
Late Prehistoric Stelae, Persistent Places and Connected Worlds
This paper examines how monuments with ‘local’ idiosyncrasies are key in processes of place-making and how, through persistence, such places can engage in supra-local and even ‘global’ dynamics. Departing from a detailed revision of its context, materiality and iconography, we show how a remarkable Iberian ‘warrior’ stela brings together the geo-strategic potential of a unique site, located literally between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic wor…
Rethinking Iberian 'warrior' stelae
Iberian 'warrior' stelae have captured the imagination of researchers and the public for more than a century. Traditionally, stelae were considered 'de-contextualised' monuments, and research typically focused on the study of their iconography, paying little or no attention to their immediate contexts. As a result, despite the large number of these stelae known to date (c. 140) and the ample body of literature that has dealt with them, fundamenta…

The epigraphic stela of Montoro (Córdoba)
Digital image analysis-based strategies for quantitative monitoring of rock art sites
Digital image analysis based study, recording, and protection of painted rock art. Some Iberian experiences
Allochthonous red pigments used in burial practices at the Copper Age site of Valencina de la Concepción (Sevilla, Spain)
Laboratory and in situ assays of digital image analysis based protocols for biodeteriorated rock and mural paintings recording
Las losas grabadas de la Cañada Honda de Itálica. Una revisión a la luz de la utilización de técnicas de análisis digital de imágenes
The pavement slabs of the area known as Caada Honda, in Italica Archaeological Ensemble, show an important amount of engravings traditionally interpreted as game boards. This paper shows the recording of the different slabs unearthed during the International Work Camp "Realidad Cultural: Itlica Arqueolgica", edition 2010. A set of digital image analysis techniques has been employed for the recording of the slabs, allowing a fitted typology of the…
