In this study we estimate relative pollen productivity (RPP) for plant taxa characteristic of human-induced vegetation in ancient cultural landscapes of the low mountain ranges of Shandong province in eastern temperate China. RPP estimates are required to achieve pollen-based reconstructions of Holocene plant cover using modelling approaches based on Prentice’s and Sugita’s theoretical background and models (REVEALS and LOVE). Pollen counts in mo…

  • Vegetation succession and East Asian Summer Monsoon Changes since the last deglaciation inferred from high-resolution pollen record in Gonghai Lake, Shanxi Province, China

    Open Access•Qinghai Xu, Fahu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 8

A cal. 20-year-resolution pollen record from Gonghai Lake presented the detailed process of mountain vegetation succession and East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) changes since the last deglaciation in Shanxi Province, North China. Modern vegetation distribution and lake surface pollen assemblages suggested that the fossil pollen mainly came from local and surrounding vegetation in Gonghai Lake, which reflected the elevational changes of plant commu…

  • Assessing the Importance of Climate Variables for the Spatial Distribution of Modern Pollen Data in China

Open Access•Jianyong Li, Qinghai Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

To assess the importance of climate variables for the distribution of modern pollen data in China, we present a continental-scale dataset consisting of 1374 samples. Boosted regression trees and constrained ordination techniques are employed to quantify the importance of six climate variables (annual precipitation, PANN; actual/potential evapotranspiration ratio, Alpha; mean annual temperature, TANN; mean temperature of the warmest month, MTWA; m…

  • East Asian summer monsoon precipitation variability since the last deglaciation

Open Access•Fahu Chen, Qinghai Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Reports•2015

The lack of a precisely-dated, unequivocal climate proxy from northern China, where precipitation variability is traditionally considered as an East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) indicator, impedes our understanding of the behaviour and dynamics of the EASM. Here we present a well-dated, pollen-based, ~20-yr-resolution quantitative precipitation reconstruction (derived using a transfer function) from an alpine lake in North China, which provides fo…

  • East Asian summer monsoon precipitation variations in China over the last 9500 years

    Open Access•Jianyong Li, Liisa Ilvonen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Referencias: 20

To better understand the long-term changes of the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation ( P jja ), quantitative reconstructions and model simulations are needed. Here, we develop continental-scale pollen-based transfer functions for P jja with weighted averaging–partial least squares (WA-PLS) regression and a Bayesian multinomial regression method. We apply these transfer functions to a set of fossil pollen data from monsoonal China for quantit…

  • Indicator pollen taxa of human-induced and natural vegetation in Northern China

    Open Access•Manyue Li, Qinghai Xu et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 12

Research on modern pollen assemblages of human-induced vegetation is conducive to extracting human impact information, and provides basis for determining human impact intensity. The use of 189 surface soil pollen samples from human-induced and natural vegetation shows that there were significant discrepancies of indicator pollen taxa and human impact intensity between different vegetation types in Northern China. The results demonstrate that fore…

  • Pollen–vegetation–climate relationships in some desert and desert-steppe communities in northern China

    Open Access•Yuecong Li, M Jane Bunting et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 7

In this paper, we consider the relationship between pollen assemblages, vegetation and climate in some desert and desert-steppe areas in northern China using both surface soil samples and pollen trap samples. Discriminant analysis shows that samples originating from different climatic or geographical regions can be separated reliably on the basis of pollen assemblage regardless of sample type. DCCA analysis indicates that surface soil pollen asse…

A total of 237 surface soil pollen samples were collected from less disturbed zonal communities, and a new surface pollen data set has been established in northern China. Pollen—climate parameter transfer functions using weighted-averaging regression and calibration partial least squares (WA-PLS) model as a tool to reconstruct past climate changes from pollen data, were tested with this new surface pollen data set. • Holocene climate changes in the mid-high-latitude-monsoon margin reflected by the pollen record from Hulun Lake, northeastern Inner Mongolia

Open Access•Ruilin Wen, Jule Xiao et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

Pollen-assemblage data from a sediment core from Hulun Lake in northeastern Inner Mongolia describe the changes in the vegetation and climate of the East Asian monsoon margin during the Holocene. Dry steppe dominated the lake basin from ca. 11,000 to 8000 cal yr BP, suggesting a warm and dry climate. Grasses and birch forests expanded 8000 to 6400 cal yr BP, implying a remarkable increase in the monsoon precipitation. From 6400 to 4400 cal yr BP,…
