  • The ecology and bioactivity of some Greco-Roman medicinal minerals

    Open Access•Charles W Knapp, G E Christidis et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Cited by: 23•References: 69

Mineral compounds, as pigments and therapeutics, appeared regularly in the technical and medical texts of the Greco-Roman (G-R) world. We have referred to them as 'G-R medicinal minerals' and we suggest that despite their seeming familiarity, there are actually many unknowns regarding their precise nature and/or purported pharmacological attributes. Earth pigments are part of that group. This paper presents a brief overview of our work over the p…

  • The interweaving roles of mineral and microbiome in shaping the antibacterial activity of archaeological medicinal clays

    Open Access•G E Christidis, Charles W Knapp et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2020

  • Greco-Roman mineral (litho)therapeutics and their relationship to their microbiome

    Open Access•Effie Photos-Jones, Charles W Knapp et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 1

This paper introduces a holistic approach to the study of Greco-Roman (G-R) lithotherapeutics. These are the minerals or mineral combinations that appear in the medical and scientific literature of the G-R world. It argues that they can best be described not simply in terms of their bulk chemistry/mineralogy but also their ecological microbiology and nanofraction component. It suggests that each individual attribute may have underpinned the bioac…

  • Outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in an air force base in Western Greece

Open Access•Eleni Jelastopulu, Danae Venieri et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

The findings of this study suggest that the aetiological agent of this outbreak was S. aureus. The food vehicle was the grated cheese, which was mixed with the beef and served for lunch in the military unit. This outbreak highlights the capacity of enterotoxin-producing bacteria to cause short term, moderately-severe illness in a young and healthy population. It underscores the need for proper food handling practices and reinforces the public hea…
