  • Framing the Middle Stone Age of bed V at Mumba Rock Shelter, Tanzania, using electron spin resonance and uranium series

    Open Access•Chloé Chane-Kouo, Maïlys Richard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•References: 46

  • Early Middle Palaeolithic Occupations Dated to MIS 7 at the Abri du Maras (Ardèche, Southeast France)

    Open Access•M H Moncel, Marie-Hélène Moncel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025

New excavations at the Abri du Maras have yielded remains of hitherto unknown deposits (layer 6) from the base of the sequence, with a small lithic and faunal series dated to MIS 7. In this paper, we investigate this occupation, undoubtedly in a cave context, before the cave gradually gave way to a shelter where the last occupations took place. The faunal assemblage accumulated through anthropic activities, and cervids are the dominant species. T…

  • Archaeological survey of the Modder River dongas, Free State, South Africa

Open Access•Felipe Cuartero, Maïlys Richard et al.•ARTICLE•Southern African Field Archaeology•2025

The semi-arid grasslands of the Free State Province of South Africa have produced the earliest evidence of the presence of Homo sapiens in the subcontinent, together with an extensive Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental record based on fossil assemblages. However, the known Middle Stone Age (MSA) archaeological sites in the Free State are limited to a few major localities that cannot be integrated into a unitary narrative, thus hindering our understa…

  • Morphostratigraphy and Dating of Last Glacial Loess–Palaeosol Sequences in Northwestern Europe

    Open Access•Salomé Vercelot, P Antoine et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2025

The Hermies-Ruyaulcourt site (Pas-de-Calais), investigated within the “Canal Seine-Nord Europe” project, provides an exceptional record of pedosedimentary dynamics throughout the last interglacial-glacial cycle (Eemian–Weichselian). Eight stratigraphic trenches, correlated along 350 m, reveal several pedosedimentary units strongly influenced by local topography. This study combines sedimentological and micromorphological analyses with optically s…

  • Chronology of Upper Paleolithic human activities recorded in a stalagmite at Points Cave (Aiguèze, Gard, France)

    Open Access•Maïlys Richard, Edwige Pons‐branchu et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2024•References: 19

In this article, we propose an approach to reconstruct the timing of human activity at Points Cave, an Upper Paleolithic rock art site located in the middle of the Ardèche River Gorge (Rhône valley, France), based on the dating and characterisation of a stalagmite containing soot. Points Cave (‘Grotte aux Points’ in French), also called the ‘little sister of Chauvet Cave’, is famous for its parietal art including a series of dots made of palm pri…

  • Site Settlement Patterns During MIS 3 in the Southeast of France

    Open Access•M H Moncel, Pierre Guillemot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 60

  • The Cultural and Chronostratigraphic Context of a New Leaf Point from Hohle Fels Cave in the Ach Valley of Southwestern Germany

    N J Conard, Alexander Janas et al.•ARTICLE•Mitteilungen der Gesellschaft für…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 11

During the summer of 2020 the excavation team at Hohle Fels Cave in the Ach Valley of southwestern Germany recovered a leaf point (in German Blattspitze) made from gray Jurassic chert. The find is well-preserved and remarkable for a number of reasons. First this is the only leaf point recovered by a modern excavation in the Swabian Jura, and is the first leaf point discovered in situ since 1936, when Gustav Riek’s crew recovered two well-preserve…

  • OSL chronology of socio-ecological systems during the mid-Holocene in the eastern coast of the Sultanate of Oman (Arabian Peninsula)

    Open Access•Maïlys Richard, N Mercier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•References: 9

  • Single grain TT-OSL ages for the Earlier Stone Age site of Bestwood 1 (Northern Cape Province, South Africa)

    Open Access•Maïlys Richard, M Chazan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 10

  • New Data from Shovakh Cave and Its Implications for Reconstructing Middle Paleolithic Settlement Patterns in the Amud Drainage, Israel

    Open Access•D E Friesem, A Malinsky-Buller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2019

This study presents the geoarchaeological and geochronological aspects of Shovakh Cave and the first comparative context to the nearby Amud Cave (~ 500 m downstream), providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the range of human behaviours within a small geographic area. Sediment samples from two newly excavated areas at the rear and entrance of the cave were analysed using infrared spectroscopy, micromorphology and phytolith analysis and da…

  • First contribution of the excavation and chronostratigraphic study of the Ruways 1 Neolithic shell midden (Oman) in terms of Neolithisation, palaeoeconomy, social‐environmental interactions and site f…

    Open Access•Jean‐francois Berger, Raphaelle Guilbert-Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 14

The NeoArabia project tries to understand how environmental, social, economic and technological factors work in concert to influence settlement and abandonment along a latitudinal transect of 1200 km from UAE to southern Oman. This region was affected by wide north–south variations in the Indo‐Arabian monsoon, marine upwelling activity and eustatic variations in the Mid‐Holocene. On the local settlement scale, this transect is based on fine strat…
