  • Glass from Teniky (Madagascar)

Open Access•Jean Rodier, Bernard Gratuze et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

The inland rock‐cut site of Teniky, located in the Isalo massif of southern Madagascar, represents an exceptional archaeological context recently dated to the 11th–12th centuries ad , corresponding to the early phases of settlement on the island. Unlike most contemporaneous sites concentrated along the coast, Teniky is situated deep inland and is characterized by a unique monumental architecture, raising important questions about the nature of it…

  • Secular variation of the geomagnetic field in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last millennia

Gwenaël Hervé, Lamya Khalidi et al.•ARTICLE•2026

Instrumental observations highlight that intertropical Africa is one of the areas with the most rapid changes in the modern geomagnetic field. The secular variation beyond the last centuries is poorly known due to lack of data, this large region representing only 0.7% of the GEOMAGIA50 database. The resulting large uncertainties in global geomagnetic models in this area make in particular the history of the present South Atlantic anomaly unclear.…

Novel comparison of iron smelting techniques between KAN1 and KAN3 in Kaniasso, Côte d'Ivoire. • Developed a novel method to compare iron smelting techniques through efficiency. • KAN1 and KAN3 reflect distinct ore-sourcing strategies and shifts to mass production. • Temperature management in the furnace is crucial to optimizing iron output based on ore quality. This study explores the management of two iron smelting sites, KAN1 and KAN3, in the …

  • Hammerscale and slag inclusions

Open Access•Jean Rodier, Marion Berranger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Understanding the nature and origin of iron processed in ancient smithing workshops is essential for unraveling procurement strategies and, more broadly, the circulation of iron. Studying smithing slags traditionally proves complex due to their diverse compositions influenced by hearth substances. Another technique, analyzing slag inclusions in metallic fragments, offers direct insights into the iron's chemical nature. However, the scarcity or ab…

  • The Enigmatic Softstone Vessels of Northern Madagascar

Open Access•Christoph Nitsche, Vincent Serneels et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The production of lathe-turned tripod vessels made from softstone is one of the major features of the so-called Rasikajy population that inhabited northern Madagascar from the ca. 8th to the late 15th century a.d. The raw material for the vessels was quarried in the hinterland, and over 30 quarries have recently been visited, documented and sampled. The quarry of Bobalila is the first to ever be excavated, and a large sample suite was taken for p…

  • Iron production in Ptolemaic Egypt

    Open Access•Yasser Abd El‐Rahman, Vincent Serneels•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Although ancient Egypt has a firmly established record of mining and metallurgy of gold and copper, iron production in ancient Egypt is less well documented. Evidence of ancient iron manufacture in Egypt is to be found in the burnt plant remains, slag fragments, and a furnace‐like structure discovered in the Hamama workshop in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The iron ore required for iron production was delivered from the nearby specular hematite mi…

A major necropolis, discovered in the late 19th century at Vohemar, is located on a peninsula along the east coast of northern Madagascar. Excavations in the past century suggest that a prosperous civilization — the Rasikajy — buried their dead at this cemetery. The civilization seems to have disappeared from the region probably sometime in the 16th century. We discuss the regional geographical and geological context of the archaeological site at…

The features of the main iron making processes and their products are explained after some basic concepts of mineralogy, metallurgy and on physico-chemical processing. The main methods of studies used in archaeometry applied to the productions and scraps are being discussed, especially the one…
