New age of the Dingcun 54: 100 Hominin site in northern China
The Dingcun locality 54:100 site was first excavated in 1950 s and has since yielded abundant stone artefacts and the famous ‘Dingcun human’ fossils, including three teeth and a parietal fragment. The Dingcun teeth has been regarded as a potential evidence of early emergence and development of ‘modern’ anatomic characters, making them key to understanding the origin and evolution of our species. However, there has been considerable debate regardi…

Lithic Raw Material Use at the Late Middle Pleistocene Site of Panxian Dadong
The possibility of selective use of lithic raw material in the Middle Pleistocene cave deposits of Panxian Dadong is examined in order to evaluate hominid strategies of resource management. Limestone, chert, and basalt, available in or nearby the cave, were differentially used for the production of tools and unretouched flakes. Limestone was predominantly used to produce expedient tools, unretouched flakes were most commonly made of basalt, and c…

A Late Acheulean Culture on the Chinese Loess Plateau: The techno-economic behavior of the Dingcun lithic industry
Taxonomic Abundance at Panxian Dadong, a Middle Pleistocene Cave in South China
The faunal assemblage from the site of Panxian Dadong provides evidence for a general continuity in species representation throughout a period of approximately 120 kya. Taxonomically, faunal material from Dadong includes classic taxa of the Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stegodon faunal complex of South China. Taxonomic abundance measures document a sample that is rich in large ungulate species including rhinoceros, stegodonts, and large bovids. T…

Late Pleistocene representative sites in North China and their indication of evolutionary human behavior
Panxian Dadong, South China: Establishing a Record of Middle Pleistocene Climatic Changes
Broad-based reconstructions of the Middle Pleistocene Asian environment are valuable sources of information that can augment our understanding of prehistoric human adaptations and expansion into East Asia. The sediments, speleothems, and geochronology of Panxian Dadong Cave serve as an example of the possible integration of this broader paleoenvironmental information with more fine-grained archaeological data. The current U-series and ESR dating …

Magnetostratigraphic dating of the Donggutuo and Maliang Paleolithic sites in the Nihewan Basin, North China
A detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation, coupled with rock-magnetic studies, was carried out on a lacustrine sequence in the eastern Nihewan Basin, Northern China, which contains the Donggutuo and Maliang Paleolithic sites. Magnetite and hematite were identified as the main carriers for the characteristic remanent magnetizations. Magnetostratigraphic results show that the lacustrine sequence recorded the late Matuyama and Brunhes chrons. Fu…
