Bounded coexistence through constructed social integration
In response to rural decline, China has promoted rural revitalisation and urban-rural integration. Some peri-urban villages are undergoing land value appreciation, population inflows, and rural gentrification. Existing studies examine commuting, tourism, amenity migration and displacement outcomes, but pay less attention to how locals and newcomers build and negotiate relations in everyday village life, and how these relations relate to the forms…

Seeing Digital Asia Spatially
In this short article, I use several vignettes on digital relations in Asia to discuss the spatialities of digital relations across Asia’s digital geography and to highlight the application of spatial lenses to hybrid phenomena. These vignettes from Beijing, Weibo, Weixin, Telegram, Google Drive, Myanmar, India, and the Wa State show that territory, positionality, scale, place, network, and mobility are spatialities that can be used to understand…
Borders, bordering and sovereignty in digital space
The production of digital borders and the development of digital sovereignty have effects that are felt within the bordered digital spaces and outside of them. Digital borders are not just national borders, and the effects of digital borders can be analysed at a multitude of geographical scales, from the regional to the neighbourhood, and from the national territory to the bordered and bounded instant messaging group. The contributions to this sp…

Despite extensive literature examining digital activism, there is limited geographical research exploring the spatialities of digitally centred contentious politics. This article makes use of recent literature examining territory, terrain, sovereignty and digital territorialization projects to produce a conceptual framework that can make sense of the complex geographies of digital activism in contemporary China. It then uses this conceptual frame…
Digital displacement
This paper conceptualises digital displacement as both a way through which the digital, dynamic and fragile spatialities of contentious politics can be examined and as a geographic critique of censorship. Digital displacement, understood here as the act of removing users from the digital places and spaces they wish to remain in and use, often through the act of deletion, is conceptualised through the digital displacement of two contentious politi…
Moving to keep still
This paper contributes to the interdisciplinary fields of migration and mobilities through an examination of how translocal migrants engage in a variety of mobilities in order to practice long-term stillness in Beijing, China. To achieve this the paper proposes the concept of dynamic stillness, a stillness at one scale achieved through mobility at other scales. Dynamic stillness builds on other forms of (im)mobility, including turbulent stillness…
The Surveillance Vaccine
One of my companions throughout the Covid-19 lockdown has been Gushi.FM (故事FM), a podcast that is an oral historical archive, a diverse digital memory bank with stories of poverty, exploitation, coming out of the closet, and much more. At its heart, Gushi.FM is about giving people a voice. The podcast’s coverage of Covid-19–related events began [...]
