Social-constructivist and figurational biographical research
In this article, we consider how biographical research can avoid common pitfalls such as viewing social phenomena as ahistorical, focusing on single individuals (as if they exist in isolation), neglecting power inequalities and power balances, or ignoring collective discourses and their impact on the groupings or individuals concerned. When conducting biographical research, we are constantly at risk of falling into these traps, despite all our go…

Civilisations, Civilising Processes and Modernity - a Debate
Die Welt aus der Perspektive der Entwicklungssoziologie
In line with the encyclopaedic scope of development sociology, this book offers perspectives on key issues relating to societal processes. These encompass the shaping of everyday life, intergenerational relations in diverse societies, fine-grained comparative analyses of trajectories of violence and the impact of urbanisation in conceptions of freedom. Furthermore, the book discusses issues relating to social structure with particular emphasis on…
Child Soldiers in Context
In recent years, methods in biographical research that are anchored in social constructivism and the sociology of knowledge have become established in the Center of Methods in Social Sciences at Georg-August University, Gttingen. In this context, a large amount of innovative and empirically sound research on a great variety of topics has been carried out. This new series is intended to do justice to this development. Rebels in Northern Uganda after their return to civilian life
This article is based on biographical interviews and field research carried out in two adjacent regions of northern Uganda on local peace and post-war processes. It focuses on the situation of former rebel fighters following their return to civilian life. In the case of Acholiland, these are primarily former “child soldiers” of the so-called Lord’s Resistance Army who were recruited by violent abduction; in West Nile they are primarily men who mo…

Negotiated Peace, Denied Justice? The Case of West Nile (Northern Uganda)
Reconciliation' and 'justice' are key concepts used by practitioners as well as authors of conflict-management and peacebuilding textbooks. While it is often recognized that there may be contradictions between the implementation of justice and truth-telling, on the one hand, and an end to organized violence, on the other, the ideal of a seamless fusion of these diverse goals is widely upheld by, among other things, reference to the rather utopian…

Elias and the Frankfurt School
The Structure of Social Processes
This paper seeks to explore the implications of Elias's conceptual framework and of his theoretical-empirical investigations for the study of long-term social processes. It emphasizes the centrality of the non-intentional orderedness of social interdependences and their dynamics for Elias's conception of social 'structure' and for his frame of reference (2). It is in this context that his specific concept of 'power' has to be understood (3) and a…
