Migration and attitudes towards domestic violence against women: A case study of Libyan migrants in the UK
This article analyses attitudes to domestic violence against women (DVAW) among Libyan migrants in the north of England; this is the first such study of Libyan migrants. One hundred seventy-five (175) respondents were interviewed in a questionnaire survey and 20 in semi-structured interviews. Migrant status has been identified as an important marker or precarity; gendered and racialised experiences deepen structural forms of insecurity. The resea…
Gender and Agrarian Reforms
The redistribution of land has profound implications for women and for gender relations; however, gender issues have been marginalised from both theoretical and policy discussions of agrarian reform. This book presents an overview of gender and agrarian reform experiences globally. Jacobs highlights case studies from Latin America, Asia, Africa and eastern Europe and also compares agrarian and land reforms organised along collective lines as well…

Agrarian reforms
This article explores key issues around land and agrarian reforms, beginning with definitions. It analyses debates over political intent and the contradictory economic outcomes of (redistributionist) reforms: these decrease some class inequalities but hold potential for further differentiation in the countryside. It also takes up three current issues: gender, land rights and land reforms, neoliberal 'reforms', titling and land 'grabs', and agrari…

Globalisation, anti-globalisation and the Jewish ‘question’
This article explores the relation between globalisation and images of Jews. Globalisation along neoliberal lines has often had serious impacts on the livelihoods of the poor, particularly in the global South: economic distress must be taken seriously when discussing how ‘old’ images of the ‘economic Jew’ emerge within social movements. Resistance to negative economic effects of globalisation takes a number of forms, some advocating a return to m…
Gender and Land Reforms: Comparative Perspectives
Concerns about rising food prices, food security and land grabs have focussed attention on land redistribution and land reform in recent years. The majority of the rural people and rural poor are women, but the issue of gender within land reform is rarely discussed. Agrarian reforms redistribute land either to collectives or to individual households; this article surveys the impact of the latter model of land reform for women, based on case studi…
Interactional issues in the teaching of ‘race’ and ethnicity in UK higher education
This paper draws on research into the teaching of ‘race’ and ethnicity in higher education, including interviews with lecturers and students of specialist sociology of ‘race’ options. It focuses particularly on interactional issues: the conversations conducted about ‘race’ and ethnicity within seminar rooms were often conflictual and emotional in tone. The topics around which conflicts emerged are discussed: the most common areas of conflict were…

Structures and processes: Land, families, and gender relations
The author points to the existence of a striking similarity in some of the effects of land reform upon gender relations and women's family positions. This is so despite the variation in land reform processes and in the cultures in which they occur. Family and kinship patterns both affect, and are affected by, land reform. This two-way relationship is examined, with particular attention given to the author's study of northeastern Zimbabwean Resett…
Gender Divisions and the Formation of Ethnicities in Zimbabwe
Gender and Land Reform: Zimbabwe and Some Comparisons
The article compares a study of Zimbabwean land reform with several others of the same individualised holdings type in Africa and elsewhere. It makes the point that land reform programmes should be analysed with regard both to gender and class relations among the peasantry. After discussing the historical background to Zimbabwean resettlement policies, the case study takes up topics such as the provision of services, community formation, class di…
Land Resettlement and Gender in Zimbabwe: Some Findings
While a Research Associate attached to the Ministry of Community Development and Women's Affairs, Zimbabwe, in 1984, I studied the relation between gender and class in six Resettlement Areas (R.A.s) during an eight-month period in there north-eastern Provinces: Central and East Mashonaland, and Manicaland. The country is divided into five agro-ecological 'Natural Regions', numbered I to V, indicating decreasing rainfall and soil fertility, and th…

Changing Patterns of Worker Relations in Zimbabwe: Conference Report
Women and land resettlement in Zimbabwe
Peasant demand for land is one of the crucial issues determining Zimbabwe's strategy for agrarian transformation. Yet women's demand for land has been ignored. Susie Jacobs traces the development of gender divisions in pre‐independence Zimbabwe and argues that current land resettlement models discriminate against women. Policies towards women are limited in scope and reinforce the domestic domain despite women's contribution to Zimbabwe's struggl…
