Author of His Own Fate? The Eighteenth-Century Writings of Ayuba Sulayman Diallo
The life of Ayuba Sulayman Diallo (also known as Job ben Solomon) receives a fresh examination in this article, based primarily on his own writings. The son of an Imam from Bundu in Senegambia, Diallo was enslaved in 1731 and transported to America. He survived to gain his freedom, make his mark in London society, and return to Africa in 1734. This article offers an analysis of documents from the British Library, including items that have not bee…
Personal Circuits: Official Tours and South Africa's Colony
This paper focuses on the visits of Sydney Buxton, Governor-General of South Africa, and his party to South West Africa (SWA, now Namibia) in 1915 and 1919. These, I argue, formed part of a broader economy of what might be called ‘personal circuits’ – journeys and visits by important personages – which helped to construct networks of power within the southern African region and beyond, and, in the case of the Governor-General, acted to promote Br…

Ethnicity, Ethnic Identity, and Adolescent Narcissism
The present study explored the influence of ethnicity and ethnic identity on adolescent narcissism, as well as the role of these variables in the link between narcissism and adolescent aggression. Participants were 348 at-risk adolescents (278 males, 70 females), ranging in age from 16 to 18 (M = 16.7 years; SD = 0.69 years) who were enrolled in a community-based residential program. Results revealed significant ethnic differences on narcissism, …
Locus of Control as a Contributing Factor in the Relation Between Self‐Perception and Adolescent Aggression
Researchers continue to debate the role of self‐esteem in aggression, but research has shown a consistent association between narcissism and aggression in adults and adolescents [e.g., B arry et al., 2007; B ushman and B aumeister, 1998; S tucke, 2007]. The primary aim of the current study was to examine whether locus of control ( LOC ) moderated the relation between self‐perception variables (i.e., self‐esteem and narcissism) and aggression in a…

Development and initial validation of the Inventory of Microaggressions Against Black Individuals
The present article describes the development and initial validation of the Inventory of Microaggressions Against Black Individuals (IMABI) using a sample of 385 undergraduates who self-identified as Black or African American. The IMABI is a 14-item, unidimensional measure of racial microaggressions that captures both microinsults and microinvalidations. The present findings support the IMABI as a reliable and valid measure of microaggressions th…
Making Tradition: Healing, History and Ethnic Identity among Otjiherero-Speakers in Namibia, c. 1850-1950
For at least the last century and a half, Otjiherero-speakers in central Namibia have engaged in healing rituals played out around the Holy Fire and involving a resolution of tension through appeal to male patrilineal ancestors. These ceremonies are part of traditions that have increasingly come to define Herero ethnic identity, and that have been deeply affected by the historical developments of the period. The first part of this article traces …
