  • The health of sedentism, sharing and diet and the illnesses of aggregation

    Kent, Susan Kent•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2003•References: 6

Health is a multifaceted and complex condition, as is its absence – illness. The role of morbidity and mortality from pathogens varied through time in fascinating ways. What kind of models are appropriate for past societies? Sharing and health, for example, are interestingly linked in ways usually not recognised by anthropologists. In order to understand the changing patterns of health through time, it is necessary, I suggest, to understand the c…

  • The Archaeological Visibility of Storage: Delineating Storage from Trash Areas

    Open Access•Kent, Susan Kent•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1999•Cited by: 23•References: 21

Despite the importance attributed to the study of storage behavior, little research has been conducted to determine whether it is even possible to distinguish storage áreas from refuse áreas. Archaeologists routinely separate storage pits from trash pits, but few have systematically investigated the defining characteristics of each. This study suggests that there is an archaeologically visible signature that can help researchers correctly interpr…

Joan Hoff's rehearsal of the plagues of poststructuralism in her article, ‘Gender as a postmodern category of paralysis’, women's History Review, 3, pp. 149-168, breaks no new intellectual ground, but for anti-intellectualism, disingenuousness, and sheer incivility, her article stands apart. What she describes is not an accurate portrayal either of the variety of post-modern theory or of the important and thoughtful criticism that has been brough…

  • Anemia and the transition of nomadic hunter-gatherers to a sedentary life-style: Follow-up study of a Kalahari community

Open Access•Kent, Susan Kent et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1996•References: 26

Iron profiles of communities of hunter-gatherers and former hunter-gatherers conducted between 1969 and 1987 at Dobe in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana exhibited pronounced differences during periods of rapid culture change. The loss of good health and particularly the increase in anemia through time was attributed to notable changes in diet, although changes in mobility patterns were considered a secondary cause. In 1988 and 1989, studies were c…

Kent, Susan Kent•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•1995•Cited by: 20•References: 5

Sedentarization has been implicated in the reduction of gender equality in some spheres of formerly nomadicJu/thoansi (!Kung) and Nharo Basarwa (Bushmen) life. Concomitant with the shift to sedentism, both the Ju/hoansi and Nharo have undergone significant economic transformations, and these have been accompanied by changes in attitudes towards gender. Gender equality is examined among the Central Kalahari Basarwa who inhabit Kutse, a sedentary c…

    Open Access•Kent, Susan Kent•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1995•Cited by: 11•References: 17

Diachronie research at Kutse, a recently sedentary Kalahari community, demonstrates the dynamic processes inherent during the shift from nomadism to sedentism. Observations indicate that sharing networks, and friendships that structure such networks, organize spatial patterning and camp interaction. Sedentism and aggregation combine to create tensions surrounding sharing that lead to violence and the need for a community-wide sanctioned arbitrato…

Introduction What is the relationship between camp abandonment, mobility (actual and planned), material culture, and the archaeological record? Archaeologists have used artifact frequencies as one indicator of length of occupation and mode of abandonment. However, in order to understand the relationship between mobility, abandonment, and artifact frequencies, it is necessary to examine the factors influencing the accumulation of material culture …

  • The Influence of Sedentism and Aggregation on Porotic Hyperostosis and Anaemia: A Case Study

    Kent, Susan Kent•ARTICLE•Man•1986•Cited by: 61•References: 6

Porotic hyperostosis and iron deficiency anaemia are often thought to be the direct result of a low iron diet, and by implication, a diet low in meat. A case study using the prehistoric Anasazi from the North American Southwest, however, shows diet to be virtually inconsequential in the rise in frequency of porotic hyperostosis and chronic iron deficiency anaemia. Instead, it is shown that the effects of sedentism and aggregation result in an inc…

    Kent, Susan Kent•ARTICLE•Man•1992•Cited by: 59•References: 23

Excavations at Gnatsville, a small Anasazi Pueblo site located in the Mesa Verde region of southwestern Colorado, provide insights concerning the diversity of Pueblo II sites and mobility patterns. Analyses indicate Gnatsville was occupied year round and that the inhabitants exploited a wide range of economic resources and practiced a mix of subsistence strategies that complemented one another

The traditional end date for the Pueblo II ceramic type, Cortez Black-on-white, may be as much as 50 years too early. Several independent dates from a recently excavated Mesa Verde Anasazi site in Colorado—5MT 1786—suggest a modified end date of a.d. 1050 for this ceramic. This revision is significant to type-dependent survey and excavation temporal interpretations, particularly in cultural resource management and for sites with only limited test…
