The General from Fort Hill
This article discusses the life and times of Katoba Flax Musopole, an anti-colonial politician, leftist and rare committed atheist in a predominantly religious Malawi. It examines him in the context of the many ‘transnational’ Malawians whose activism was rooted in the intellectual influences to which they were exposed during periods of work and study abroad. Following many years living and working in South Africa, Musopole returned to Nyasaland,…
Historical Dictionary of Malawi
Malawi, established as the British protectorate of Nyasaland in 1891, gained its independence in 1964 and moved immediately into three decades of one-party rule. Since the mid-1990s, however, the country has held multi-party elections, as directed by its constitution, and President Bingu wa Mutharika is currently serving his second term. The fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of Malawi, now newly expanded and updated, covers a wide range…
The 1959 Nyasaland State of Emergency in Old Karonga District
This article discusses the 1959 State of Emergency in the old Karonga District in the northern part of Nyasaland, an area that became associated with violent resistance to colonial authority, and it does so in an attempt to demonstrate the significance of local studies in understanding colonialism and nationalist movements. It is divided into three sections. The first section explains the factors responsible for the heightened political temperatu…
Independence Negotiations in Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia
This article examines the processes of negotiations for autonomy from British rule in Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It shows that developments in the Zambezia region, in particular African resistance to the Central African Federation, influenced the nature and pace of the negotiations. African nationalists conducted horizontal negotiations among themselves in addition to intense negotiations with colonial auth…

Communities at the Margin
The practice of social history is particularly advanced by the publication of collective volumes each consisting of fairly diverse studies. An outstanding feature of these publications is the comprehensive introductions in which historiographical, theoretical and comparative frameworks are provided. Communities at the margin: Studies in rural society and migration in southern Africa, 1890-1980 forms part of this valuable body of work. The authors…
The Production of History in Malawi in the 1960s
This article joins the debate on culture, history and politics in postcolonial Malawi. Concentrating on the production of history in the 1960s, the paper shows how the decade marked the beginnings of serious research, teaching and public discourse of Malawi's history. It proceeds to examine factors, such as the existing literature, which helped to fhshion the direction which the players, mainly teachers and researchers, took in accomplishing thei…
Résistance, Politics of Protest, and Mass Nationalism in Colonial Malawi, 1950-1960. A Reconsideration
A History of the Ngonde Kingdom of Malawi
Colonial Rule, Missionaries and Ethnicity in the North Nyasa District, 1891-1938
The study of Malawi's colonial history has been dominated by the establishment of British rule, the spread of Christian mission influence, and the development of nationalism, among other themes. Perhaps due to the Whiggish approach to history which has influenced many historians of colonial Malawi, critical issues such as ethnic awareness-which was developing in a pronounced way at the same time as the expansion of mission schools and the evoluti…

The Karonga War
This article suggests a new explanation for the Karonga War of 1887–9. It argues that the advent of different groups of people into northern Malawi in the 1870s and 1880s drastically altered the delicate balance of power in the region. Initially it had been advantageous to the Ngonde to welcome the Swahili both commercially and as a means of deterring further attacks. The settlement of the Henga-Kamanga in the area greatly increased the security …
Trade, the Kyungus, and the Emergence of the Ngonde Kingdom of Malawi
The subject of the relationship between trade and politics in the precolonial period of East and Central Africa has been receiving the attention of scholars in universities in Africa and overseas.2 Although these studies provide a framework for various approaches to an understanding of the rise of states, few of them are directly related to Malawi, and those which are do not satisfactorily explain the connection between commerce and state formati…
