This well-written and well-argued volume revisits French political history, especially its colonial (and neocolonial) aspects, which are a blind spot for many historians and political scientists. The intellectual pillar of the book is the notion of 'electoral imperialism'.The authors use this expression in reference to the way in which elections were used in the colonial period as a device to enable the selection and legitimisation of leaders that…
Student movements in sub-Saharan Africa
Although they have played a key role in socio-political mobilizations in sub-Saharan Africa, and sometimes even in some revolutionary processes, student movements on the continent have not attracted a substantial academic interest. The main argument of the article is that in Africa, student movements structurally stand as counter-hegemonic actors who have strongly influenced the political field, a phenomenon conceptualized through the notion of ‘…
The 1968 years
In tune with the atmosphere of the ‘global 60s’, Senegal experienced a major political crisis in May 1968 that began with a student strike, followed by the workers in a general strike. May ‘68 in Senegal was both global and local, and these aspects are not in opposition as has sometimes been the case in political and academic debates. The article goes beyond the events themselves and attempts to shed light on a period of ‘revolutionary politics’ …

In sub-saharan Africa, press history and social movements stemming from teaching crisis history show a high level of interdependence. Newspapers can be seen as a mirror of the different social mobilisation around school and university stakes, through more or less elaborated strategies of censorship and disclosure. But the development of new kinds of press is partly due to the these social movements which protest against ruling class hegemony. Nev…
