  • Soviet economic development and the third world

    David E Albright, David Albright•ARTICLE•Soviet Studies•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 7

THERE HAS BEEN a widespread view among Western observers in recent years that the slowdown in the USSR's economic growth is bringing about-or at minimum will bring about-a reduction of Soviet involvement in the Third World. According to this assessment, Soviet economic problems have become so severe that they are having a highly adverse effect on the USSR's capacity to exert influence abroad, and Moscow's assignment of top priority to improving t…

  • On Eastern Europe: Security Implications for the Ussr

David E Albright, David Albright•ARTICLE•The US Army War College Quarterly…•1984

Just as the current situation in Eastern Europe is unprecedented in the post-World War II era, so too is the challenge that it poses to the security of the USSR. The newness of this challenge derives from its multiple dimensions- political, ideological, economic, and military. Moreover, the complexity of the challenge renders it much more difficult to cope with than any that Soviet leaders have faced in the region before. To appreciate the nature…

  • A Comparative Conceptualization of Civil-Military Relations

    Open Access•David E Albright, David Albright•ARTICLE•World Politics•1980•Cited by: 13•References: 21

Since the late 1950s, discussion of civil-military relations has taken place largely within one general conceptual framework. According to this theoretical perception, military and civilian authorities constitute two distinct groups (although they each consist of a variety of subgroups), and relations between them are inherently conflictual. What keeps the conflict within bounds is subordination of the officer corps to civilians except on matters…
