  • Effects of the Covid-19 and natural agricultural shocks on preferences of farmers

Open Access•Hamza Umer, Takashi Kurosaki•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

It is imperative to examine how different negative shocks influence preferences because preferences influence micro level decisions that provide foundations for macro-level outcomes. We contribute to this domain by reporting an incentivized field experiment that examined the effects of agricultural income shocks driven by either the Covid-19 or other natural calamities on preferences (risk-taking, impatience, generosity and fairness) of Pakistani…

  • Online Communities of Practice as Agricultural information Platforms

Open Access•Guenwoo Lee, Ayu Pratiwi et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Indonesian Economic…•2025•Referencias: 29

Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study examines the potential of Online Communities of Practises (OCoPs) for providing agricultural extension services. Using a unique dataset of 1,574 shrimp farmers, including members of one of Indonesia's largest public OCoP Facebook groups, we found that despite the pandemic, Indonesian farmers continue to rely primarily on their neighbours for farming information, utilising OCoPs only as a …

  • Ethnoreligious diversity and state-building

Open Access•Krzysztof Krakowski, Hidayat Ullah Khan et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2025•Referencias: 23

Does ethnoreligious diversity lead to higher or lower support for a central state? In this study, we propose that the relationship between diversity and state-making depends on the degree of intergroup contact between different ethnoreligious groups, which varies with locally fractionalized and regionally segregated societies. We hypothesize that high intergroup contact in fractionalized localities contributes to intergroup noncooperation that in…

  • Price and Non‐Price Factors in Development of Rice Cultivation

    Open Access•Deepak Johnson, Takashi Kurosaki•ARTICLE•Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies•2024•Referencias: 8

The high rice prices of 2023 have highlighted the need for increasing rice productivity. But improving productivity, especially in low‐performing rice‐producing regions, should also improve incomes for the numerous smallholder cultivators. This article examines what we can learn from the experience of high‐performing rice‐growing regions, which have both high rice yields and incomes. We focus on two best‐performing villages from Kerala, southern …

  • Do Women Council Members Allocate More Public Goods? Evidence from Rural India

Yuko Mori, D Rajasekhar et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2024•Referencias: 30

Gender quotas are intended to address the underrepresentation of women in government. However, their effectiveness remains controversial. This study explores the random assignment of gender quotas across villages in India, examining whether women members of local councils affect public goods allocation in their constituencies and identifying potential challenges they face when implementing policies. We conducted a field survey in 100 villages, ea…

  • Developing Textbooks to Improve Math Learning in Primary Education

    Open Access•Takao Maruyama, Takashi Kurosaki•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2024•Referencias: 21

Although primary school enrollment in developing countries has rapidly increased since 1990, the quality of education has stagnated over the years. In teaching and learning practices, textbooks are an important intermediate that links curriculum, teachers, and students. Through a randomized controlled trial in El Salvador, this study evaluated the effect of a package of interventions including the distribution of textbooks that were carefully des…

Abu S Shonchoy, Abu Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2023•Referencias: 22

Objectives. To evaluate the impact of a community health worker–based “in-home growth monitoring with counseling” (IHGMC) intervention on anthropometric outcomes in Pakistan, where 38% of children younger than 5 years are stunted. Methods. We used an individual, single-blind, step-wedge randomized controlled trial and a pure control group recruited at endline. We based the analysis on an intention-to-treat estimation using the coarsened exact mat…

  • Differences in circulating fatty acid-binding protein 4 concentration in the venous and capillary blood immediately after acute exercise

Open Access•Shigeharu Numao, Ryota Uchida et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of PHYSIOLOGICAL…•2021•Referencias: 31

Background Circulating fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) is a marker for various diseases. It would be highly useful to have simple and less invasive techniques for the assessment of FABP4 concentrations in the clinical research setting. The purpose of the present study was to assess the concordance of circulating FABP4 concentrations in venous and capillary blood both at rest and immediately after acute exercise in healthy young males. Result…

  • How Does Contract Design Affect the Uptake of Microcredit among the Ultra-poor? Experimental Evidence from the River Islands of Northern Bangladesh

Kazushi Takahashi, Abu Shonchoy et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

This study examines the demand of microcredit among ultra-poor households in northern Bangladesh. We implemented a field experiment to identify what type of credit is best suited to their demand. We found that the uptake rate by the ultra-poor is the lowest for regular small cash credit, followed by in-kind credit. We also found that the ultra-poor are significantly more likely to join a microcredit programme than the moderately poor if a grace p…

  • Spatial Characteristics of Long-Term Changes in Indian Agricultural Production

Takashi Kurosaki, Kazuya Wada•ARTICLE•Review of Agrarian Studies•2015

In this paper, we comprehensively describe spatial patterns of long-term changes in Indian agriculture at the district level. Variables of concern include the land use intensity, the ratio of rice and wheat in areas under foodgrains, the ratio of non-foodgrains in gross cultivated area, the fertilizer use intensity, and individual crop shares in gross cultivated areas. As a byproduct of the descriptive analysis, we propose a new regional classifi…

  • Floods, Relief Aid, and Household Resilience in Rural Pakistan

Takashi Kurosaki, Humayun Khan•ARTICLE•Review of Agrarian Studies•2011

Based on a pilot survey conducted in early 2011, in ten villages in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, we analysed the damage caused by floods in Pakistan in 2010, the distribution of aid, and the extent to which households recovered from flood damage. Our findings are as follows. Flood damage within a village was disuniform. Aid from outside was distributed to households that had suffered larger damage to their houses than others, but…

  • Crop choice, farm income, and political control in Myanmar

Takashi Kurosaki•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

Myanmar's agricultural economy has been under transition from a planned to a market system since the late 1980s and has experienced a substantial increase in production. However, little research is available on the impact of economic policies in this country on agricultural production decisions and rural incomes. Therefore, this paper investigates the impact using a micro dataset collected in 2001 and covering more than 500 households in eight vi…

  • Consumption vulnerability to risk in rural Pakistan

Takashi Kurosaki•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2006

As one of the dimensions of vulnerability, this paper empirically investigates the inability of rural dwellers to cope with negative income shocks. A variable coefficient regression model is applied to a two-period household panel dataset collected in the North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan, an area with high incidence of income poverty and low human development. The empirical model allows for a different ability to smooth consumption, approxi…
