Post-Carbon Inclusion: Transitions Built on Justice
From an ‘Imperial Mode of Living’ to a ‘Caring Commons’
This chapter briefly sketches a degrowth perspective revealing the challenge of inequities within global production for trade and flows of trade, and offers a Minority World analysis-cum-response of those implicated in an ‘imperial mode of living’ (Brand and Wissen, 2021). An Australian activist who tries to exchange this mode for a ‘solidarity mode of living’ (Brand and Wissen, 2021) is tracked, including their move to eco-collaborative housing …

Marx, work, agency and postcapitalist prefiguration
Marx's interpretation of ‘praxis’ as a primary expression of what we are, of self-realisation and what we might achieve as social beings, frames his revolutionary thought. This article connects Marx's unique approach to certain forms of contemporary grassroots resistance and community-based postcapitalist responses to global heating and the totalitarianism of capital. In particular, his appreciation of humans as at one with nature supports a post…
Urban Ecological Futures: Five Eco-Community Strategies for more Sustainable and Equitable Cities
Cities are critical sites for understanding, and potentially ameliorating, the effects of global ecological change, the climate emergency and natural resource depletion. Contemporary cities are sociomaterially connected through global markets, trade and transportation, placing ever-increasing demands on the natural environment and generating dangerous pollutants and emissions. Current approaches to address these environmental crises are dominated…
Postcapitalist practices and human, economic, and cultural geographies
This commentary engages with Callum Sutherland's article, ‘Mark Fisher and Reimagining Postcapitalist Geographies’ by outlining key characteristics of some contemporary prefigurative hybrids pointing towards postcapitalism. It offers certain exemplar developments of postcapitalist degrowth and ‘real valuist’ futures that indicate the potential, and challenges, for contemporary geographers to approach, engage with and expand into postcapitalist st…
Covid-19: Capitalist and postcapitalist perspectives
The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses of capitalism as an economy and polity, and revealed the latent potential of postcapitalism. A novel coronavirus is more likely to arise given massive industrial agriculture; the state of health care sectors is a result of neoliberal policies; the pandemic’s impacts were characterised by capitalist inequities; economic repercussions expose a crisis-prone system. Conversely, responses included pandemic …
Money: Top-Down and Bottom-Up
Recently, two books have been published by social scientists who have been preoccupied with the concept and practice of money for some time. These books are implicitly relevant to ecosocialists giv
Sustainability Citizenship in Cities: Theory and Practice
The spaces of work that built the dominant modernity in Westernised societies of the Global North in the twentieth century are changing (Dale and Burrell 2008). Many once-foundational jobs have been resigned to the past, are in short supply or have been dispatched offshore. In rhetoric, if not reality, a new spirit of entrepreneurialism has emerged to fill the void. The current political dictum of ‘doing more with less’ posits the notion that com…
Your Money or Your Life: Money and Socialist Transformation
This article argues against a common-sense logic that money can assist in socialist transformation, espouses a non-market ecosocialist position and urges greater clarity in associated discourse. Analyses of capitalist operations show that growth is not simply a characteristic tendency of capitalism but rather an essential outgrowth of its deficiencies. Marx identified these deficiencies, indicating that the end of capitalism was an end to money, …

Marx's Concept of Money
This work relates Marx's theory of money to his overall political economy, and places it firmly within the wider context of his political and philosophical thought. It has for some time been held that there exists an epistomological break between the early 'humanist' and later 'scientific' Marx. However, in this ground-breaking study Anitra Nelson links Marx's conecept of money to his early key concepts with particular reference to 'alienation'
Disability and mortgage default: An Australian study
Debates on human rights and discrimination regarding housing and disability need to emphasise community care and inclusion as principles for improving policy. A qualitative study of Australian mortgage default reveals special difficulties for households with a member with a disability; that is, illness, impairment or injury limiting everyday activities and enduring for several months. Interviews showed that such households adopted similar strateg…
Steering Sustainability in an Urbanising World: Policy, Practice and Performance
Remembering Stephen Randall Niblo (1941-2008)
Today I feel like the boy featured at the start of the story Crazy February: Death and Life in the Mayan Highlands of Mexico by the US anthropologist Carter Wilson. My copy of this book is the 1974 University of California paperback edition and it is falling apart. This boy is all at once the perpetrator and victim of his own circumstance. He has a man, who we will find out he has killed, strapped to his back and he is on a journey to a town wher…
Marx’s Objections to Credit Theories of Money
Recent reconstructions have inclined towards or substituted Marxian credit theories of money for his theory of the money commodity,2 therefore it is significant that Marx criticized the weak credit theories of money with which he was familiar. First, distinctions between commodity and credit theories of money are identified. Second, aspects of Marx’s theory of money are highlighted. Third, Marx’s objections to concepts associated with credit theo…
Effective Community Engagement for Sustainability: Wombat Community Forest Management Case Study
The first significant government sponsored community‐based forest management project in Australia was initiated in Central Victoria in 2002. This paper analyses the initial stage of the Wombat Community Forest Management Pilot Project. The paper develops a functional concept of ‘effective community’ for structuring community engagement in these kinds of natural resource management projects. The effective community has characteristics in common wi…
Marx’s Theory of the Money Commodity
Marx defines the commodity in a unique way. His theory of the money commodity is a unique commodity theory of money. It developed from a political critique of the utopian socialists’ concepts of money, labour time and exchange value. Besides using Hegel’s dialectical method, Marx also adapted certain ideas from his elaboration of ‘measure’ in the Logic to develop his concept of money. Similarly his framework for relating ‘price’, which appears in…

Two Models of Residential Conservation: Communal life in an Australian box-ironbark forest
Grassroots community organisations offer simple ways of maintaining natural heritage values. Given the degradation of landscapes supporting fauna in many parts of the world, such organisations promise direct benefits for local communities and ecological biodiversity. Also, global warming, resulting in part from the removal of forest, will abate with the restoration of trees. The Bend of Islands (Victoria, Australia) boasts two organisations dedic…
Men With Guns
Men with Guns is a deceptively simple but multilayered story; an intellectual discussion starter which will have best results with those already familiar with the various themes of underdevelopment. The film is only loosely based in the contemporary period and could have been made 25 years ago, that is, anytime after the failure of the Alliance of Progress became apparent. Indeed the film's wisdom is situated within the perspective of those who a…
