Modelling plastic fluxes with Inca-macroplastics in the Imus catchment: Impacts of long-term accumulation and extreme events
Plastic environmental pollution is threatening water resources, aquatic ecosystems, and human wellbeing but is still highly uncertain with global fluxes to sea of 0.4–13 Mt\yr, and up to 517 Mt of mismanaged plastics on land. Catchment modelling tools are required to challenge current knowledge, simulate impacts of management initiatives, and complement global and observation-based studies. Here we present the first spatiotemporally explicit mode…
Sino–Russian Cooperation in Arctic Maritime Development: Expectations and Contradictions
Russia accords high priority to developing its Northern Sea Route while acknowledging substantial investment needs. China has shown increasing interest in Arctic shipping and has finance and technology. Infrastructure cooperation has been highlighted in the context of the warming relationship between the two countries. Russian scholars express considerable concern regarding China’s long-term goals in the Arctic and reluctance to allow China’s inf…
Praying for Blue Skies: Artistic Representations of Air Pollution in China
This article examines how artists have engaged with the issue of air pollution in Beijing, where poor air quality has become a serious public health matter. Artists have utilized various mediums including performance art, photography, and painting to represent smog. Through generating media and online attention this work has contributed to a relatively vibrant “green public sphere” (Yang and Calhoun, 2007) of air pollution discourse. In contrast …
Re-theorizing civil society in China: Agency and the discursive politics of civil society engagement
Scholarship on Chinese civil society has produced rich empirical studies, but there have been few attempts to theorize the empirical knowledge acquired. Moreover, the question of how to conceptualize the political agency of civil society in a non-democratic context has received limited systematic attention. In this conceptual article, we draw on a discursive approach to politics to analyse the political agency of Chinese civil society. Our analys…
The authoritarian logic of regulatory pluralism: UnderstandingChina's new environmental actors
Over the last decade,Chinese citizens, judges, and prosecutors have started to take action against industrial pollution, pluralizing a regulatory landscape originally occupied by administrative agencies. Regulatory pluralism here has an authoritarian logic, occurring without the retreat of party‐state control. Under such logic, the party‐state both needs and fears new actors for their positive and negative roles in controlling risk and maintainin…
